Generic Ships for a proxy fleet.

I want to collect every ship in the lists. But that costs money!

So I want to try something and I would like the advice of those on this board.

What if I pick up a few of each type of vessel and just label them with a generic marker on the base?

Example:

Battleship = BB-1 BB-2 etc.

Heavy Cruiser = CA-1 CA-2 etc

and so on.

would you all let me into a tournament if I show up with Burger's ship viewer print outs of my ships and (Just for an example) Bismarck for my BB, an Essex Class Carrier back up by 2 Trento class cruisers and a small group of different destroyers ( Le Hardi, Gearing) representing Nagato(BB), Shokaku(CV), 2 x Mogami(CA) and 6 x Kagero (DD)

I ask because quite frankly I cannot tell the difference between ships and if my opponents fleet list says what each ship is and he can ID them, I would take their word for it.

Thanks. :)

I like that Idea, especially if you get the 1/6000 ships. :)

As for tournaments, I don't see a problem with it.

I would have no problem with it as I personally cannot recognise ships by their silhouette.

However I could see some people not "getting" it and demanding propper ships or that you use counters.

I've found that after having played with the miniatures a while, I am starting to be able to recognize ships by sight.

After you've played for a while you'll definitely be able to tell which ship is which.

Using proxies or generic tags during a tourney would be acceptable to me.

Well as a person who runs these kinds of tournaments, I would not mind (especially because this is a new game). If it came down to it, I'd supply some ships (if I had any) for you to use. Counters a perfectly acceptable. However, you couldn't feild a Bismark, an Essex and 2 Trentos in the same fleet. You should pick you ships from a single list.

I think that the friendlier the game the more acceptable you'll find that.

Personally I think I'd be fine with ships reasonably close to what they represent, generic labels and a quick chat before hand explaining what was going to be what.

For a short time I was playing some Napoleonic game (Fire as she Bears, think) using those Pirates ships, with little flags with the ships name on them on pins at the rear. That worked. I see no reason why you couldn't use proxies so long as they're similarly identified, although personally I'd just use counters.
