I remember watching an episode or two of B5 when I was in when I was back in 6th form (that's the last year of high school for our curious 'merican friends
), Season 1, I think.
I remember not thinking very much of it at all...it was really, really bad television. (or so I thought at the time.) I didn't get back into it.
Then years afterwards - older, wiser, more (as in some) disposable income - later. Reaverman brought some EA ships he had just painted round to my place that looked so cool (I like spaceships and sci-fi) and some wierd looking blue thing (a Sharlin) for the Minbari (or space elves as I had it described to me.)
The game was cool even if I got my ass whupped by Minbari (my first impression of the game was bad actually, along the lines of - it looks cool but Stealth is hideously broken and unbalanced...this actually influenced my first choice of fleet!)
Anyway, drifting off on a tangent here...I never liked the series much, never watched more than a few episodes until a few months ago when I forced myself through the tedious stuff that in Season 1...then I was hooked! There were still some bits that were very rough around the edges but I could overlook them as the main story line was awesome - ancient intelligent races? Forces of light and darkness, the President Clark / Nightwatch plotline? Fantastic and compulsive viewing....until....until...Lorien.
I hate him.
HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE etc
The whole concept of the 1st uber being completely relegated both Shadows and Vorlons to moronic children crazy with power - all their ancient and ingenious ploys, their subtle manipulations, their insidous power plays washed aside by this dude and his 'revelation'
I couldn't take the Shadows and Vorlons seriously after that.
However - the rest of the EA stuff was still great, if a little rushed. I loved what happened to Garibaldi and all the Mars episodes were great. Then....it just got lame again. (apart from one episode in Season 5 that stood head and shoulders above every other episode in that Season - Day of the Dead...funnily enough written by one of my favourite authors, Neil Gaiman.)
All in all - B5 was a good show, great setting and background but was marred by extremely inconsistent acting (some v good some v bad points) and indeed the same can be said for the plot (some bits superb others just disappointing and seemed to me quite nonsensical.)
I much prefer playing ACTA than watching a B5 episode....
This just my opinion, take it or leave it
