Gaim vs Centauri advice

Mongoose
I played a 5 point raid game today against the Gaim, i had 2 Altaurians, 4 Vorchans and 2 Maximus. not the best fleet it was a bit thrown together. And il admit i cant remeber what the gaim played had excatly ( other than swarms of fighters).

This isnt a blow by blow but what happened waas that i tried to get him and got swamped by Emines and fighters (part of the emain problem was a accidental bunching of the Vorchans).

Any ideas on how to deal with this when trying to get into range?

The only ships that should be anywhere near each other are the Maximus' and whatever they're escorting (the Altarian, 1 each) and even then should be kept apart until fighters are a threat.

Using APTE the Vorchans have an effective strike range of 33" and should easily be able to engage from turn 1.

Vorchans can evade suicide fighters and boarding pods thanks to their speed.

Concentrate firepower. Ignore the fleet carrier unless you can kill it in turn one (it will have launched almost everything by the end of turn 2). If he has few queen ships take them out quickly to deny your opponent initiative and crew quality.

If the mission is VP based strike quickly, concentrate on killing a few queen ships and then bug out.

If you can't shoot anything else, shoot boarding pods, crewed missiles (cant be rescued by fleet carrier) and fighters IN THAT ORDER.

If the mission allows it use hyperspace.

It will be a tough fight, but Centauri can win.

thank you for that.

They can win yes, the first game i played against gaim was a victory as i jumped in on top of them, i would just prefer it if that was not the only way i can beat them.

And get double VPs for killing Queens too!

Its a shame that the crew quality loss suffered when all queens are lost is almost entirely negated by the flight computers. I still just cant understand why they bothered.

Its like 'yeh, lets have this great special rule that means Gaim crew quality is reduced to utter crap after the queens get killed, a racial weakness if you will, and then lets have a special trait that counteracts the worst of this special rule unless the ship is crippled and happens to loose the flight comp trait at which point its toast anyway - who cares'. Pointless, a waste of good oxygen, streamlined you say????!? - bla you get the idea.

IIRC the Gaim player in the battle was using:
1 Shrutaa
1 Shakaak
1 Stuteeka
2 Sataaka
If that helps. Not the best fleet possible, but one using the models the player currently has.

As an impartial observer to that battle, I have to say the Gaim looked seriously nasty this time.
Compared to seriously weak when a the centauri jumped them from hyperspace last time.

That is true as Mercy was there for both of those games wacthing.

Against a gaim fleet with more fighters and which was optimised for 5p raid i struglle to imagine a way to get them other then jumping in on top of them and killing them with as many fighters still on board as possible.

How does the Flight Computer trait negate the crew quality loss? IMHO, the trait description stating that the crew quality of the ship can never be less than 4 refers to campaigns and times when you use random CQ values. The penalty from killing a Queen should still take affect. Is there a ruling that states otherwise?

Nope WRONG. Flight computer is very specific, as long as its operation the ship functions with a MINIMUM effective CQ of 4. Period. It applies to both one off games and campaigns as long as the FC is functional.
