Gaelcon Roll Call

It has to start somewhere.
It has to start sometime
What better place than here
What better time than now?

Well, 2 hours and Clontarf castle rather than my room, but yu know what I mean.

I have provisions, miniatures, scenery, rules and what have you. Tournament is go! go! go!

Burger and Hash would ban me from even staring at that Jolt, I'd be tripping my head off on that stuff :D

Hope everyone has a good time, and I hope the 'Sentient Rabbit' boys do a good job too ;)

So, the winner was Tenacious B with his Shadow fleet, and Emperorpenguin came second with his Centauri. Some fun games were had all around, I've a few crappy photos I'll post later on, but I'm going clubbing!

Thanks for a great day Lorcan :D

cheers to everyone else too

Will give you my address Lorcan so I can get my runners-up prize of a year's supply of jolt cola......

I guess I'll start the ball rolling on the report side. My fleet consisted of a Primus, Sulust, Centurion and Altarian. I played against The Pirv's Drakh (Heavy cruiser and 3 Light Cruisers) in my first game and won a close victory. I destroyed his heavy cruiser in turn one but then made the mistake of not concentrating fire while trying to chase the pesky agile Drakh! All credit to The Pirv for putting up such a fight, in the end he had one light cruiser hiding behind a planet from my remaining 2 ships, one of which was crippled!

Game 2 saw me taking on my brother's Brakiri fleet, my most regular opponent! He had an Avioki, Halik and 4 Ikortas. I concentrated on killing two ikortas first to even the odds before going for the Halik which was spitting fire everywhere! Then after a volley of fire from the Avioki incinerated my centurion I went after that beast, inflicting THREE no weapons crits in one turn of shooting! At this point the Avioki jumped into hyperspace with me unable to inflict the necessary hits on the 64 damage monster to prevent its escape. The Ikorta fled off the board, resulting in a major victory for me.

Game 3 I was against Burger's Minbari (Tinashi, 2 Tigaras and Leshath)and having never beaten Minbari in a competitive game I didn't fancy my chances. My plan was to use my superior long range fire to draw his close fighting Tigaras forward out of +1 stealth range. The bait worked and the Tinashi closed a little too fast so with a lucky stealth roll I hit it with a volley of Primus fire and followed this up by taking advantage of his nials attacking the rear of my centurion to send in my fighters to use "Scanners to Full!". The Tinashi went boom, followed quickly by both Tigaras, the Altarian proved great at getting between the Minbari and firing everywhere. In the end the Centurion was crippled but I'd not lost a ship though his nials escaped in order to save him from a "fleet annihilated".

Overall the Primus was as ever the star of the show. After one turn of amazing battle laser fire Lorcan said to me "..and you want them to drop Centauri lasers! Are you mad!?" :P
The Sulust was great, I can only say that at 4AD this ship is overkill. The Centurion drew a lot of fire, especially from those mistaking it for a Prefect! The Altarian turned out to be a surprise, doing much better than I thought, though I'm sure largely due to opponents not targetting it because of hull 6 and no battle lasers.

Unfortunately now I can't make it to the "Battle of the Line" game on Monday because my girlfriend is working tomorrow, so we're going out on monday instead.

Personally my summary would be... "your dice rocked. Mine sucked"
It was basically just a close-in punchup and the luck went your way, my entire fleet dead without killing even a hull 5 Raid ship. As Tank would say, its a dice game, this kind of upsets happen!

Star of the show was definitely TenaciousB's custom-modified shadow hunter models, they rock!!!

What a fantastic weekend!!!!!

I'd like to pass on a huge thank-you to Lorcan for a fantastic tourney, and I should have pics of my custom-hunters (or chunters, as I call em  ) over the next few days.

Craic was great, and it was good to meet new people and catch up with the ones already known.

Looking forward to the next con already!!!!

I concur. :D

Ok I'll add more - it was a great con and I thoroughly enjoyed taking my Shadows (One battlecrab, one scout at old tourney rules) who wiped the floor with some pesky bone and fan heads although they did get their arachnid buts kicked by Tenacious_B's funky converted Shadow Hunters (one of whom is definitely a 'punk' Shadow - it has a mohawk!).

Still - to the victor goes the spoils - well done Tenacious_B!

I came third overall (I think) but mostly played people I've already played (Burger and Digger) - I'll get you next time all you other people * shakes fist angrily * especially you EP  (joking)

I think Burger has some pics as well...unfortunately for some reason we forgot about the minis and took pics of ourselves mostly after rolling the dice (either grinning absurdly or shaking with barely constrained fury!)

The games were all very good though and the atmosphere was very friendly...so come to Gaelcon folks! The flights were very cheap (well about £40 return inc. tax if you happen to live near London Heathrow ;) ) and the hospitality superb.

Well done Lorcan for arranging this and kudos on the Earth-Minbari war on Sunday as well, it looked very impressive!

Fantastic weekend and a mixed bag for the Drakh. (1 Cruiser and 3 Light Cruisers)

As EP said, close in the first game, but that bloody Altarian. I have a new nemesis  Best game of the weekend for me and a well deserved victory for EP. 7 points scored.

Second game versus Digger, and i got battered. Completely annihilated (which usually happens when i take on his Centauri. I dunno, my dice seem to absolutely love him. And so do his dice lol) Well played that man. a big fat 0 points scored.

Final game against Black Omega. Managed to keep his fleet out of range in turn one and vaporised an Artemis with my Cruiser. After that thing just went from bad to worse for the EA with my ships rolling an inordinate amount of Crits. I almost felt sorry for BO, but then i remembered the last game i had against him where even his fighters were scoring mases of Crits against me. Very good game for me, but the dice were trying to apologise for such a poor performance against Digger and could do no wrong, so i can't claim a victory just on my own merits. EA totally wiped out. 20 points all for me.

Final score 27 points and a great weekend.

A big Cheers to Lorcan for a great tourney. Sorry i missed the Battle of the Line, but the hangover was in full force and BSG CCG was calling my name.

(Also ended up undefeated in BSG CC game. It's good and i rock lol)

I'm glad everyone had a good time. now Leprecon is on in February, and I'm already considering running something at that. Maybe a Dilgar War participation game, thanks to the fleet box I got at the charity auction (for four hundred euro!)

I'd also like to throw out my thanks to Lorcan for a whole lot of fun during the valiant defense of the Line (or Io).

For a while it looked like Earth might have been in with a chance when the first shot by an earth ship de-crewed a Minbari cruiser. Fighting continued through two hard turns until the Earth fleet evaporated on turn 3.

However with several dead Minbari ships and damage to each and every one of them, the Earther's claimed the "Moral Victory" :P

I'm sure some pictures will be forthcoming from the game soon.

john

the moral victory was always ours - we wash!

EDIT: Photos are here. I'll have some general photos up later today as well, for any who are interested in exactly how silly we get.

Just out of interest Lorcan. Could you post the final standings just so we can see how we all faired in comparison to one another?

F**k off Pirv! :D

Thanks to Lorcan Nagle for organising the tourny at Gaelcon. Great to meet you and EmperorPenguin (and brother). Also great to see Digger, Hash and Burger again.
This was my first tourny outing with the EA and oh boy did i suck! LOL
I came dead last with a 3,0,0 score in the three games against Brakiri, Minbari and Drakh.

I'll hold my hands up and say that i largely deserved it for taking a fleet of 3 hyperions, a nova and 2 artemis (using my minis from the fleet box).
In my defence i will say that my luck and dice rolling on the day sucked badly! In the first game against the brakiri, Emperor Penguins Bro got a lucky crit on my Nova from his Avioki in the first turn reducing it to speed zero practically in my deployment zone thus leaving it so that i could get nothing in the side arcs -arggh!

Similar luck in game 2 when Burger managed to take out all three of my hyperions in the second turn, even the catastrophic explosions were against me-badly damaging my ships and barely denting his tigaras!

Ahh well, i still had a good day and picked up losts of pointers for next time. Was quite impressed with the little artemis ship, it can take quite a bit of punishment for a skirmish level ship and the railgun armament is pretty effective.

next time gadget....next time!!
