Fuel scoop usage

Well, as this thread has devolved into an IP discussion, let me just remind everyone that this part of the thread did not start out as a question of "can I quote posts from other forums or not?", regardless of whether the OP explicitly withholds permission to do so. The point is that these two posts by GamerDude (see links below) did not make it clear that he was quoting EDG. In fact, they look as if GamerDude is actually saying those things, link at the top notwithstanding. In anyone's book, directly reproducing anyone's writing without explicitly acknowledging it as a quotation is plagiarism, pure and simple.

GamerDude (I presume you're done with the "Random" sockpuppet), I suggest that you either abide with EDG's wishes and edit those posts to simply link to the discussion in question, or at the very least you wrap a quotation box around EDGs words so that we know those are his words and not yours.

Y'know, EDG says someone is my sockpuppet and the idiots think that's gospel. How is it being his sockpuppet fighting his fights AND advertising SPICA like he does? Any good will Guffy built up with his posts you and EDG totally wiped out. And I've been spending money on other companies Traveller PDFs.

For the record, I NEVER hide behind anything or anyone. I have one account here... this one.

Want to think otherwise? go ahead.

Want me to honor EDG's wishes? he should have honored mine to stop PMing me instead of antagonizing me and then publishing private conversations in public (If I'd done that to him he'd be screaming bloody murder).

To hopefully get gamerdude and Al off the hook...

I am not a sockpuppet for either of them, or anyone for that matter, nor a troll. I think some apologies are in order for those remarks. I am simply a lurker who'd prefer to go back to lurking. I only registered to point out what looked a bit hypocritical to me. I'd been wondering about the post copying going on at SFRPG for a bit and this seemed a fair tie in.

FWIW fixing that is appreciated, even if the method and tone left much to be desired. I didn't intend the whole thread to be deleted. I had no idea getting permissions was a big problem (well, aside from plop's of course), or that the additional posts made after the copied posts couldn't have been kept.

Now is everyone done calling everyone names and ready to return to the actual topic? Can somebody get the copyright, IP, or whatever issues posts moved to their own thread where it might serve a good purpose in educating on the subject?

I never said anyone was your sockpuppet. I suspected it was. Also, insulting other users here is really going to get you further into their good books.

Vile is nobody's sockpuppet.

Any good will Guffy

You can't even get his name right. It's "Gruffty".

And I've been spending money on other companies Traveller PDFs.

Good for you?

Stop PMing you? Again, you're a liar, Al Beddow. I haven't PM'd you directly in years. If you're still going on about the "conversation" we had via PM two years ago then get the living frak over it. And stop claiming that I'm "antagonizing" you, when you're the one who's been stalking me all this time and taking random potshots at me in almost every bloody thread for two years. I don't think anyone here is stupid enough to believe that I'm somehow "antagonizing" you - unless you're antagonised just by the fact that I post anything here in the first place, to which (again) I say "Get over it".

As for your PMs... you brought those into the public domain yourself, by claiming that I was "arrogant" and "nasty" towards you. I had no choice but to post them to show everyone that actually I was being civil in those despite YOUR unprovoked arrogance, nastiness and name-calling in them towards me.

And may I remind everyone that YOU were the one who deliberately quoted my posts (and didn't even do it properly) against my explicit wishes, and started all the trouble on this thread? Would you care to explain how me posting a link to another board is "antagonizing" you, exactly? Or how deliberately quoting my posts against my wishes isn't antagonising me? Would you?

I have absolutely no interest in you or your opinions, but you keep metaphorically shoving yourself in my face whenever I'm trying to have a normal discussion with anyone here (even when I'm not involved in the thread you're posting on). Just STFU, get over it, and leave me the hell alone, will you? Then maybe we can all get some peace around here.

So why didn't you just ask us OVER THERE ON THE SFRPG BOARDS if you had a problem with it? Or raised it via PM at least? Instead, you decided to use an already hot thread on another board to raise the topic? That is a very bad way to start posting on a board and doesn't show very good judgement on your part, despite your intentions.

FWIW fixing that is appreciated, even if the method and tone left much to be desired. I didn't intend the whole thread to be deleted.

As Vile said here, I raised the subject in PM with Vile, asked him to put a link to the CotI thread and delete the quoted posts himself (but to keep the new ones), but he chose to delete the whole thread instead. I didn't want it to be all deleted either, FWIW, but these things happen and I couldn't do anything to bring the thread back - maybe it's better that it's gone. I even updated and clarified the forum rules to prevent such a thing from reoccuring. But it seems that even doing all that still leaves "much to be desired"? There's no satisfying some people, is there.

Unlikely. I suspect this entire thread will be locked or deleted once Matt notices it (which is why I don't really give a damn anymore). Which means, once again, that it's been nothing but an enormous waste of everyone's time and effort, all caused by GamerDude's irrationally obsessive grudge against me YET AGAIN.

Last week, Al was struck by the "revelation" that he actually was "the horrible monster EDG has been exposing to you all" (those are his own words, you can see them for yourselves right here), said he was quitting the boards, and then it took him all of about 4 days to decide that he wasn't quitting after all, and went straight back to acting the exact same way towards me as he'd always done. I guess he was lying about his revelation as well, but he seems to be making a habit of that lately...

(oh and Al, don't you dare even think about making any more snarky comments about how many times I've said I was quitting (largely because of you) and then coming back later. Now you've done it yourself, you really can't cast those stones anymore).

One of the problems with refueling from an icy moon or asteroid in the outer zone is the fact that the frozen material you're landing on is gases. In fact the frozen water is probably buried under several kilometers of frozen gases. A very small amount of heat can cause them to expand back into gases with explosive force possibly causing damage to the ship or refueling equipment. For icy asteroids the problem is compounded by the fact that there is very little gravity to hold the gases making it more difficult to "skim". Icy moons might have enough gravity to keep the gases close to the surface long enough to "skim".

You know I never considered that. I assumed: land on Ganymede, start shovelling snow, turn it into fuel, then leave...

Joe Haldeman's The Forever War had some good parts about the dangers of very cold frozen places, and even 2000AD's Halo Jones (Book 2) had a bit at the end about it.

All of this, if taken into account, has some pretty far-reaching effects on your Traveller universe. Gathering hydrogen from asteroids and gas giants becomes a dangerous job best left to the professionals. Planets with liquid water, or easily-available water ice, become much more desirable sources of starship fuel. I've never been convinced that starports tend to be near sources of crude fuel, though - how many airports are built next to refineries or oil wells?
