I, on the other hand, would find it utterly pointless, since they would never have met, and were not designed to fight one another...

There were a substantial nuimber of WW1 vessels still around in WW2 though. Most of the Russian fleet, for one.

Ahhh. . . well that is the difference between the hard core history types and the people who just want to play a fun game.

For example, I think a "Final Countdown" scenario where the Missouri suddenly finds itself in the middle of Jutland would be a lot of fun!

Actually the modern naval rules that Skytrex used to sell (and which I think navwar publshed ina revised format) would allow you to do that. They had design rules that would model WW2 era armoured ships as well as ultra-moderns.
 
You guys need to read the Axis of Time triology. A modern Multi national UN fleet has a new secret ship that explodes causing the fleet to travel back in time and land in the middle of the battle of Midway and it's on. Great reading.
