I hope this isn't a preview of the general quality of the editing.
It isn't, no - for some reason this preview seems to have been drawn from a pre-edit file. Looking into that (it _should_ be impossible with our processes, but there is no accounting for Mr Cock Up).
Will be fixed come Monday. The print version will not be affected.
Sigh, these youngsters. Back in the old days someone would have been flogged for a crime like that. Too soft they are these days. Bring back keelhauling, nothing better to keep your slav.... erm underlings in line.
Anyhow. This was something that I always found odd with most every version of Traveller so far. Ship designs in odd corners that seemed thrown together at random and made no sense in the light of day.
The X-Boats are as stripped down a design as you get and they have dedicated Tenders and tugs at both ends of every jump. Any military design must have far more endurance than this simply to survive. With fuel for one week even if you allow a few extra days due to low energy use this thing can only jump from base to base.
The navy may as well save money and station X-Boats at its bases.
A fleet courier will be jumping all over the place to catch up with fleets and squadrons as they move. With one week of life support it would be cheaper to hire abunch of adventurers in a far trader and use them to carry to message than have to recover the powerless wreck and train new crew.
Having been on many other traveller boards I am sure there are hordes of people here who woud love to nitpick these designs before they go to print just for the love of it. Perhaps you could recruit some to cast a jaded eye over ship designs.
I enjoy mongoose publications and am happy about it picking up traveller but its little details like this that, if left, become habits and in time lower the quality of product. There are loads of people out here, we can help (when we have time).
Keep up the otherwise good work lads and lasses.
