I'm just one of those people who can't resist tinkering with something even when its working. What follows are some experimental upgrade for Fighter and Bomber Craft loosely inspired by the Marine upgrade options found aboard some Noble vessels. Please note, I highly suggest testing these by apply all the upgrades to all the small craft of one type aboard your carrier. i.e. Upgrade all your Bombers with the same upgrades, or all your fighters. This is for simplicity sake. Also NO Craft my carry more than one pod at a time, unless otherwise stated.
Additional Armored Platting: The high attrition rate among pilots is one of the harsher realities of space warfare. To combat this, and to inspire confidence in the often green pilots assigned to these craft some flight crews will wield heavy steal platting to the more vulnerable portions of the fighters frame.
Effect: add +1 to the hull value of any Fighter or Bomber this upgrade is added to. However Fighters with this upgrade suffer -4 speed, bombers with there more powerful engines suffer -2 speed.
Cost: +2 Points
Additional Gun Pods: Some squadron tactics call for fighters to harass enemy vessels in conjunction with the fleet Bombers. To better effect this tactic external gun pods will be attached to the fighter to improve its hitting power.
Effect: Add +1 AD to the fighters gun attack, Pod
Cost: +1 Point
Heavy Ordinance Load: Sometimes deck officers will insist on maxing out a bombers Ordinance beyond its safety specs, such measures while insuring heavier attacks against enemy shipping greatly increase a bombers fuel consumption, and maneuverability and is generally frowned upon by squadron commanders.
Effect: Add +1 AD, to the bombers ordinance value, this remains a one shot weapon system. Also because of the additional weight the Bomber suffers from -1 Dodge modifier.
Cost: +2 Points
External Fuel Pods: In may ways Fighters and Bombers are a compromise of the limits of small craft technology. Speed, armaments, and effective range are all balanced against each other to create the best strike craft. Often the speed of a small craft is not limited by its engines thrust to weight ratio, but rather its fuel capacity. By adding externally mounted Fuel pods pilots are able to maximize the performance of there craft without fear of flying off into the endless void with no fuel to return home.
Effect: This upgrade my be bought twice, each upgrade adds +2 to the speed of the craft. However if two fuel pods are taken the Fighter or Bomber suffers a -1 to its Dodge score. Fuel pods may be jettisoned at the beginning of the move phase to regain there full dodge, but they lose all speed bonuses. Pod
Cost: +1 point per pod
Fighter Shield Pod: Bombers are almost universally equipped with an internal shield generator something that was standard practice in the Second Republic for fighters as well. Alas such miniaturized technology is almost unheard of in these present times, and expensive to boot. However an external generator can still be mounted at some cost, though most officers consider such luxuries detrimental to a pilots "fighting spirit"
Effect: The Fighter gains One point of Shields just like a bomber, however its speed is decreased by -2. Pod
Cost +2 Points
Ace Pilot: Some pilots through skill or incredible luck survive battle after battle and gain that needed experience to maximize there ships to the fullest. Such pilots are very hard to stop individuals with dozens of kills to there names.
Effect: Any fighter or Bomber piloted by and Ace adds +1 to there Dogfight Rating as well as +1 to there crafts dodge score up to a maximum of 2+ dodge.
Cost: +5 Points
