I have only allowed my players to use armor damage reduction against melee or ranged weapons.
pg. 132 AE edition:
Whenever a character is hit in combat whether from a melee or ranged weapon, the Damage Reduction (DR) score of any amour he is wearing at the time is deducted from the damage rolled by the weapon.
That's basically how I do it as well. When the party is armoured up the ying-yang, nothing gets the fear of the gods in them like a nice flaming attack.... Or any other energy for that matter.
