Encumberence rules

Folks:
I want to thank everyone for helping me get into Traveller and help with my silly questions.

However, I am having a hard time envisioning my character, and his max encumbrance.

The number are just numbers to me – I want to be able to visualize what the numbers mean and have an encumbrance rating: light, medium and heavy. Has anyone played with a chart like this, or detailed a chart out? I am suspecting it would only be used in specific times, since: “a -2 here, and a -2 there” would really add up quickly since a character max skill rank is 4.

What this be breaking the game mechanics? Again sorry if this is a silly question – I am coming from AD&D; however, this game has become my new vice.

I round the rules in the Classic Traveller book on page 36. I like how they lower the attribute stat; however, I am still having a hard time envisioning my character.

For example: what statistic would Bruce Lee (in: Way of the Dragon aka Enter the Dragon) have?

Dont know if this will help, but a rough guide is some one with 6-8 in a attribute is of around average, so strength 7 is an average person, some one with a attribute range of 9-11 is above average, as that +1DM can make a lot of difference when making a skill roll.
12-14 is way above average, some one with a strength like this is built big. Attributes of 15 is exceptional, some one whose strength is 15 is the type of person who would compete in the worlds strongest man competitions.

Bruce lee would probably be DEX 12 or so, with the relevant skill at level 4, which would be +6 to martial arts roll, which guarantees success even with a roll of double one.

Hope this roughly helps you visualise the attributes, its how i tend to explain things to new players to traveller.

Thank you this did help. I am a very new player, since I have only had the book for only a few weeks, and I'm not even finished with it. I was lucky to notice that RPGdrivethru had GDW Classic rules for download, which I got; however, I have Mongoose's hardback version, which I have been reading.

thank you again.
