He's taking a raider fleet to an event. Must be a bit potty.
True. But I want to anyway. Besides, its the least competitive form of event....
The question is how best to put such a fleet together.
With 5 battle points to spend, and 8 ships maximum, and only one ship at each priority level, one wouldn't think it could be that hard to figure out the best (or at least least worst) fleet to field.
The simplest one to field would be 5 Modified Nova-Class Dreadnoughts....this is quite tempting especially with the possiblity of using Urobach's highly shiny model for them*.
Having only 5 ships out of 8 leaves me out-initiative sinked, but the combat laser is little more than a pittance anyway (bloody cast-off Abbai junk), and having one on every ship means I should get to shoot at something!
Obviously there are plenty of ways of modifiying the list; drop one Novafor a Fleet Captain (Admiral) springs to mind - but a double-cost battleship is often a shoddy warship, and a Nova is a shoddy battleship to start with....Would this be worth it? And what sort of admiral? A Top Gun, for instance, seems a bit of a waste for 6 flights of deltas.
Some lower priority ships would help - Battlewagons pack the same laser power each as their bigger cousins, almost the same durability with their heavy armour, and the same fighter complement per point. But with only forward guns worth mentioning, they arguably make the initiative sink problem worse, not better!
Strike Carriers are nice but poorly armed....still, a skirmish-level fleet carrier is not to be sniffed at (especially, in a campaign where reserves arrive by hyperspace mid-battle, one that can clear its launch deck in a single turn without Scramble! Scramble!)
Modified Freighters......despite racking up 8 AP attack dice I still can't see these things as anything but target practice. I try, but....no.
Fighters.....Double-Vs are actually moderately scary in that there are 'undreds of them and they're not badly armed if they can get through to a strafing run (and I have normal delta-v's to burn!).....a few independant wings might add a bit of sting.
Hmmm....
As a starting point:
3 Modified Nova-Class Dreadnoughts
2 Battlewagons
3 Strike Carriers
2 Flights of Double-Vs
Please deliver suitable insults to the usual address, on the back of a piece of batter pudding.
* I think it suits it to a tee....yes?
