Duration of Distraction?

Well, point of note, d20 is only as crunchy as you want it to be, as EVERY rule is openly optional. I can see what you mean, but if taken as the spirit intended by the words, the power seems pretty clear to me.

I am very sorry that I was so imprecise. I'll try to define things better next time. :)

Note: Just to be clear, I've moved from a discussion on this particular rule (which, I agree with simjimm, has by now probably been sufficiently debated), and on to a more general philisophical discussion of d20 ... just because I can.

August, while your comment about the level of crunchiness in d20 is true, in fact applying to (possibly arugably) every RPG, I think one of the important facets of d20 is the fact that virtually eveything covered by the rules is defined in the rules. Some consider this a strength, others a flaw.

Off hand, I can't think of any other example where a rule requires an arbitrary GM decision, without explicitly stating such, or providing a good grounding by which the GM can formulate his decision.

But perhaps I'm really just nit-picking now.

To be fair, the misunderstanding of two posters on this forum doesn't necessarily indicate imprecision. It's always possible I failed to comprehend what most will consider obvious.

And, since I've possibly raised more complaints (albeit minor ones) than I have offered praise regarding Lone Wolf as a whole, I think I'll take this opportunity to say great job, August. Lone Wolf rocks. It's moved me from a position of "I recognise d20 can be many things, but for me it won't work for anything other than hack and slash" and "Mongoose who?", to one of "I think d20 is to be my system of choice for some time" and "Conan is the next game I'm picking up, and I'll be keeping an eye on other Mongoose products."

I'm with SableWyvern on this. I would not have looked at a D20 product if it had not been Lone Wolf, having seen some before and not being that impressed. I have been so impressed with the Lone Wolf core book, that I have picked up a stack of B5 stuff as well, and will be keeping a close eye on other Mongoose products. Mostly though I want more Lone Wolf.

Well done guys. :)

Thanks, guys. Seriously, it's providing products that people really like and really play that keeps me thrilled to be a Mongoose! :)

The first set of Mongoose books I started buying was Judge Dredd, closely followed by B5 and now Lone Wolf, all due to previous interest in those settings. However, I've found myself drawn into the Mongoose net and got Slaine, Conan, and Armageddon 2089 (plus numerous D20/OGL supplements) simply because of the Mongoose name on them. I'd bought other D20 material before, but now more than half of what I buy for myself is Mongoose stuff.

My gripe at Mongoose is that they produce books too quickly! I've only got the first 23 Quint books, but none of the Quint II ones! *sulk*
I'll pick up the Magnamund Magic and Epic Kai books when they come out of course.

NS.
