Dredd: Character Variation

Well, I picked up my copy from Playin' Games in London today and came home and made a character. I like it LOTS.

There's so much more possible variation in character abilities than in the previous Dredd rpg incarnations - I can't wait to see the Traveller chargen applied to citizens...

Now to run a test combat and start writing up a hotdog run for my new recruits... they know Dredd, but not gaming, so I'll make sure it has a good few Cursed Earth classic elements. I was going to use pre-generated characters, but the process is so enjoyable, I think it'll help them invest in the adventure.

Hooray!

I'm really glad you like it, Ned - and I wish you every success with introducing some Dredd fans to Dredd gaming.

You'll soon find that even if everyone makes a Street Judge, no two will be the same. That's one of the features I really liked about the Traveller system, and they just made it better with the Dredd setting.

One thing I'm adding to give each player a bit of background and a future resource~
I've created a list of NPC Judges, with stats and notes to act as examining Judges when players go for their full-eagle.
Looking at the Dreddd saga, there is a precident for Judges ( Street Judges anyway ) to sound out problems and doubts with their examing Judges.
The Morphy/Dredd and Dredd/Dekker relationships where the ex-rookies visited their old mentor proved useful for the comic-strip's writers to develop character traits and plot, presumably GMs can do similar.
My list allowes some interface with canon names from all four Divisions in the current rules
Giant, Renga, Ohio, Washington, Anderson, Chaney, Corson , Mortina etc.
( I've avoided names from any strips more than ten years old as these will now be Sector Chiefs. Dept heads, Academy tutors , Long walk Judges or K.I.A. )
I've created a A few interesting archtypes of my own and, just for the fun of it, had a go at using other fictional cops as templates for other Judges ( T.J. Hooker and Zip Nolan are the two I've used to date ).

Interestingly some Ape citizens, Perkins from the De Marco strip in any case, recieved some training for a while as potential Judges. ( Judge Heston from the Class of '77 is a qualified Judge , though this is only a fan strip, albeit illustrated by a current Dredd artist.
Am flirting with allowing clones for people who are paranoid about rolling dice. They get a pool of points to spend on both physical and mental attributes rather than dice rolling and at start of play specify what their first special ability will be.

Did (and doing) an all Ape one shot for Halloween. Always a good time. One of the things I LIKE about the Dredd setting is that it doesn't have to be all Judge, All the Time.
