Drakh mothership, old and new version

Orphanmaker

Mongoose
Hello everyone!

I have the oppertunity to buy a Drakh mothership model from a guy here in sweden, however he described the model as "Drakh mothership-old style". Does anyone have a picture of how the old version mothership looks like?

Cheers

my new style mo-ship is my only full scale ship remaining. It's in a bag somewhere, we had an accident, i dropped it and it caused a minor earthquake. Given i sold everything else of this scale, why do i keep it? well, it took so long to arrive I'm never letting that sucker go. might look to use it with some of Burgers card models for a quick fleet.

I put one together for a friend. Never have I seen so much metal involved in one model. Forget pinning, I ended up building it around a piece of 10mm steel rod. And I won't mention the amount of glue, and putty that went into that build.

"new" mother ship - Never ever had to take a full scale file to a mini before it was like being back in metalworking at secondary/high school.

Ironically have a couple of the originals and they were fine.

Tell me about it. I ended up filing a groove, the lenght of the ship, through all the internal strutts, so I could place the four quarters around the central rod I used.

I regret not putting it on the scales once it was all together. Taking into account all the steel, white metal, putty, and glue, it wasn't light.

I was very careful not to drop it, in case it made a hole in the floor.

The Drakk fleet was an odd one to put together. I went from putting together raiders, that next to shadow scouts, had to be some of the fiddliest minies I've ever assembled. To building the mighty metal behemoth that is the mother ship.

You are right Banichi the raiders are a real *8*8* to put together. I eventually pinned all of mines. Filled the end of the fin flat, drilled it and pinned it.

You cant really do that with the shadow scouts. Some of the tendrils are wide enough, some not, so they still are my top of the table for minis you hate to build, but have to.

I found the Drakh Raiders to be tedious, but not particularly fiddly. I drilled out the holes so that the "pins" on the end of each fin would fit smoothly, and then put them together assembly-line style, one at a time, so that the rest would have time to dry. Little dab of superglue on the pin, put it in the hole, hold it for 20 seconds, on to the next.

The shadow scouts were more trouble, but pre-drilling the holes and filing down the edges of the fins a bit helped. And then a drop of glue between the fins as they are drying (wiggle them so the glue wicks down between them) helps hold them together.

Same here, though I also had to use a Dremel to get the head section to even barely mate with the body. Even then I can't believe how much putty I needed to fill all the gaps. I built two this way and still have one more that I'm not sure I want to bother with. Worst model I've ever assembled in *any* system :-(.

You guys are starting to scare me into NOT building now....

And miss out on all the fun.

Besides once you mastered a few CTA fleets there isn't a mini in the world you can t put together.

Only used a Dremel twice on CTA ships, number 1 - to clean out the "free metal" on a Warlock's engines. (unfortunately a std problem for this otherwise very nice mini)

and

A self inflicted issue - to hollow out the "bins" on a freighter, although it turned out fine in the end, (and may be appearing in Da Bosses "Dilgar War" soon), it was certainly not one of my best ideas.

So, so, true.

I thought I hadn't taken any pictures of the mo ship I built. But I'd forgotten about this one.

You can just see the base I made out of two regular metal bases, each with about a quarter sliced off, and pinned together. It was the only thing I could come up with to support the mothership.

would you believe my mothership sits quite nicely on a single base. it's actually nicely balanced all around, certainly one plus for the designer.

I used 1/8" brass rod on a single 60mm plastic GW flying base and it works great.
