( Dragon Warriors) Free RPG Day.

Mongoose
So its today for us southern mob and tomorrow for the rest of you lot.

Looking forward to it?

And why is milsims the only Oz store participating? I'm gonna have to go kick some retailers arses.......wait, I'm in Adelaide theres no one here to kick. :D

Shipping is probably a factor (along with apathy). I agree that Milsims should be applauded and other NZ and Aussie stores given a boot.

Picked up my copy of the Introductory booklet for Dragon Warriors yesterday. It contains the first four chapters of the main rule book and a short encounter at the end (which is new.) All in all a very good introduction to the game.

Downloaded a .pdf of it from Drivethru last night. :)

I just looked over this and I am of the opposite opinion. Compared to other Free RPG day stuff, the DW one fails to be much use to anyone except as an extended advert.

The character creation material is incomplete to allow even Knights and Barbarians to be created properly. There isn't even any demo PCs.

The rules are incomplete to allow it to be used a demo ruleset to run the adventure.

The adventure is so short that it barely qualifies as such.

Free RPG is partially about promoting RPGs, but its more about doing that by providing a playable product of some kind. Most other Free RPG products got that, but DW is the worst I have seen.

Character creation - whats missing? Admittedly Initial equipment is, but theres enough weapons and armour scattered through the Combat rules and creature descriptions to get by.

Can't see where the rules are incomplete ( excepting Fright Attacks which was an oversight).

Adventure could have been a bit longer but theres a lot of hooks for expansions there.

Honestly with the wealth of free downloads( Adventures, weapons and armour excerpts.) that exist for DW if your happy playing warriors your set for at least 6 months of free gaming.

Could it have been more polished? Yes. Are there a couple of things missing? Yes.

Worst? Not by a very, very long shot.

Initial equipment is the obvious one. Plus there is only stats for a sword.

Also, there is no mention of any rules outside of combat. I thought the catch all rule of roll 1d20 under stat should have made its way in there somewhere.

Sitting next to the other Free RPG adventures, it looks weak.

If you have any Free RPG products from this year that are worse, I would keen to hear of them. IMO DW was the poorest of the 4 that I managed to pick up which is a real shame.

FWIW I am not saying that the underlying DW material is weak. However, the way its been collated is not very good at all..

IMO the White Wolf Geist Quick Start was by far the best free RPG product - 48 Pages and a pretty good adventure too. I heard that the free Eberron adventure was good too but unfortunately I didn't manage to procure a copy. I did manage to pick up the following:

1. Castles and Crusades Primer (not bad)
2. Paranoia (pretty good)
3. Heroe's Bane (pretty standard Fantasy RPG)
4. Rogue Trader (my second favourite after Geist)
5. Path Finder Bonus Bestiary (well presented but 3.5 only)

All in all not a bad haul this year!

Hmm. Where I live there are zero gaming stores in the whole country. And as far as I can see, within a 4000km radius, hehe.

I know that strictly speaking I could dig around and find most of the PDFs for those games online but in practice its much less fun. Plus I hate reading big documents on a computer.

NobleKnight provided FreeRPG products to any internet sale.

Sorry Hal I don't quite get what you mean. I don't mind buying things over the web I just hate reading PDFs!

If you bought physical books from NK from their webstore, they added physical copies of Free RPG products. No PDFs involved.
