Does anyone use the Traveller Universe?

In other words, most people want to play in worlds that are ba-
sically familiar, building upon familiar sources, they do not want
to learn the ropes of a completely unfamiliar setting.

D&D!!! Bow to it. D&D is set in the D&D universe, which came from D&D originally which had a certain D&D feel to it.

True. It does help if your RPG has a large-ish Appendix "N" included.

The D&D universe is about as pseudo-European / pseudo-medieval
as a universe can be. It has horses, steel swords, a feudal system
with knights, legendary races and monsters, and all the other fami-
liar trappings of thousands of very well known fictional and histori-
cal sources - small wonder that it became a commercial success.
