Display Cases! What should I Get?

Darthxon

Mongoose
I need some advise to where I should get a descent size display case show off my babylon 5 miniatures at home. Any help would be great?

I like to use the Sabol cases. The only big downside with them is that they're soft shelled. So if you need to store your minis or you move, better get something with a hard-shell...

Darthxon, - You don't say where you are located. I am guessing that you are in the USA so probably the following won't help, however,

I use Ikea, glass display cases which are ideal and very cheap. All glass with 4 shelves, about a foot and a half foot print and 5 and a half feet high. I have six

I had my partner put custom shelving up on the walls of my office specifically to hold my Nova Cat and Liao BattleMechs. A few smiles and gentle nighttime persuasion got me a few more shelves for my Bablyon 5 fleets.

Note to self: Never post after 2 AM.
Display Cases. Not transport cases...

For display cases, I just use what I have and since I have a lot of Korean style furniture...

@Kickaha
We do have Ikea in the USA. Lots of Ikea. And yes, they are cheap. But yes, they also look cheap.

Darxthon, you also have to figure what'll fit into your budget. Took me awhile to put together the money for the display cases I have...

Taran - Don't think you know the model I am talking about. All glass, on 4 sides & 4 glass shelves.

They do not look cheap in any way. In fact theylook very good indeed.
Especially when lining two of the walls around my game room.

(And in reality since I spent $410 dollars on the six maybe they are not quite as cheap as i thought).

no i think the one he is meaning is http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/10011055

these are very nice, and dont look cheap what so ever

What I am trying to look for is something affordable for all my miniatures. I am running out of space because of my Star Wars miniatures from Wizards of the Cost. I need a display case for my Warhammer 40k Black Templars army and a lot of my Star Wars miniatures from Oddesy Slipways and my Babylon 5 miniatures.

That is why I need a good affordable display case. I will be checking out Ikea as well.

Any more advice that I might need?

I live in Orange, CA. USA

Thanks

You aren't going to do much better than you will at Ikea for those cases shown. Having glass display cases is not cheap. I got a wooden shelving unit with pivot up and slide in glass doors a while ago, but I don't remember the price. I want to say it was around $80, but it's been about 12 years ago that I bought it. It's essentially one of those cheap particle board book shelves, with wood framed glass doors on each shelf. Each shelf is about 13 inches tall, and 10 inches deep. It's about 30 inches wide and there are four shelves. I believe it's called a Barrister Bookcase. I'm in the process of adding another shelf half way up in each shelf to increase my storage capacity.

Hegemon - You got it, that's the Ikea cabinet I am talking about.

In my experience its hard to to find a cheap display case that does'nt hide the models inside and is still aceptable by my other half, (even if it is "just for the games room".

At the end of the day I would rather to spend my cash on the models inside the cabinet than the cabinet itself.

If I remember correctly a full price Adira was almost the same price as the cabinet it is in.

Works for me.

Those look nice, and not unlike some that Mongoose has.

I was looking at getting that glass cabinet last year, but instead settled on this glass CD rack from Ikea

The thinking being that I can get a lot more miniatures in it (don't need 1' between shelves), and takes up less floor space. I've got a couple on the wall, and works very well. You can adjust the height of each shelf and there's nothing stopping you putting more shelves in than the 9 it comes with.

The other alternative is of course to make your own out of 6&10 mm MDF and some wood beading to make slots for two pains of sliding glass. Just get the depot to pre cut the MDF so you've got straight 90 cuts. SHould work out a lot cheaper.
