Dilgar vs Mercs

This is a battle report from our new campaign format that "Clanger" has devised.

Scenario = Raid level "Planetary Assault"

Attacker = Dilgar Fleet: 1 Wahant, 2 Kahtrik So, 1 Garasoch, 1 Ochlavita Ki, 1 Rohric, & 4 Jashakar Ki (Scouts).

Defender = Assorted Mercenary Scum! – 2 Drakh Hvy Raiders, 1 Drakh Cruiser, 1 Drazi Firehawk & 1 Raiders Nova.

Turn 1:

With the Mercs setup in a defensive screen in front of the planet, the Dilgar entered from the furthest table edge. I kept the Wahant and both Kahtriks in hyperspace, as they are soooo slow, it would’ve taken forever to get to the target!
With the Ochlavita, Garasoch and 3 of the Scouts formed into a pentacan, the remaining scout and the slow moving Rohric were convenient init sinks to make sure that the mercs would be just where I wanted them… the Pentacan ‘skip’ ability also helping in this regard.
The Dilgar forces advanced in a tight pack, the Garasoch scrambling the remaining torpedo fighters onto the board. Paul (Clanger) obliged by moving his fleet towards me, the Firehawk leaving even the Drakh ships behind, and the ponderous Nova crawling after them…
With the mercs taking the bait, I placed the opening jump point to their rear, mere inches away from the planet…

Turn 2:

Paul lost initiative again (I was three up after all), and had to move two of his ships – thanks to the Pentacan – before I moved even one of mine!
With the Nova so much slower than the rest of his fleet, it was going to be a turn or two more before it could get into shooting range – even with the Raiders version having a 18” beam on the front! The two Drakh hvy raiders attempted to “come about” to get the jump point within their Front arcs, but only one made it. The Firehawk and the Drakh Cruiser continued towards the “bulk” of the Dilgar fleet, the Firehawk getting boresight on the unfortunate Rohric.
The big boys came out of hyperspace in a compact squadron, bringing one of the raiders and the Nova into their front, the 2nd raider to their starboard and one of the defense satellites into their port arcs… good times!
With the raiders' Delta V fighters acting as Interceptors for the three ships, the Dilgar sent their fighters after the Firehawk, their torpedoes doing some damage, but nothing to really upset the mercs.
The capital ship firing began with the squadron of big ships. The weaker guns to the port and starboard meant that the raider to port was left wounded but still in fighting shape, and the satellite to starboard fared the same, hurt but not dead… not too impressive  However, the story to the front was decidely different; The raider, though helped out by 2 fighters, could not Dodge, Intercept or GEG the massive amount of bolter damage enough to avoid destruction, and the Nova was bombarded with missiles, losing around a third of its Damage. In a contemptuous display of firepower, the Wahant used one of its two Mass Drivers on a second satellite, reducing it to paper clips!
Paul fired his Firehawk at the Rohric, but did not manage to cripple, or even slow the tough assault ship. The Drakh ships did not have anything to fire at, and the Nova was still miles away from the action…

Turn 3:

Initiative stayed with the Dilgar, and so the mercs, again, had to move two of their ships before I even moved one. The Nova plodded expectedly forward and the surviving Drakh raider moved around behind the big boys. The solo scout and the Rohric meant that the Cruiser and Firehawk had to go before my two squadrons, so the Pentacan focused on the Cruiser and the big boys moved forward to keep the Nova within bolter range…
As all the Delta V’s were destroyed in the previous turn, there was nothing to stop all 10 of the Thorun torpedo fighters going after the damaged Firehawk; the massed fire saw the Drazi ship left a burnt out hulk.
The Pentacan fired first, and the Drakh Cruiser was also left to the vacuum. Paul had managed to get his Nova within range of one of the Jashakar’s, but could not do enough damage to kill it off! The combined fire from the big boys saw the Nova disappear, and the combination of Thorun fighter fire and the rear missile launcher on the Wahant finished off the lonely Drakh raider. The, virtually, ineffectual fire from the satellites was also soon to be silenced…

Turn 4:

The Kahtriks moved into range of the two remaining satellites, and the Wahant moved into planetary orbit… Mass Driver, Bolter and Missile fire did for the 50 emplacements in short order, also killing 9 of the 25 troops in the bargain… the fighters helped to see off the defending troops, leaving the planet ripe for troop drop.
The Dilgar immediately set to repairs, utilising their new installation, and also launched defense platforms of their own.

Considering the last time I used the Dilgar, I played them like a complete muppet and let Da Boss' Centauri hump them silly; I was pleased to see that - when used properly - the Imperium is a fleet to be reckoned with :D

The Assault Dilgar fleet is slow but absolutely brutal. This fight is exactly what the Dilgar expect from these things if they can get into Bolter range. Long-range rear beams, turret bombardment ships (Vree!), and long-range specialists (Saggis, Apollos, Elutarians) can cause all sorts of issues with speed criticals, but if you have access to Hyperspace, it just doesn't matter. This kind of fleet almost uses Hyperspace better than the Shadows do --- and the excellent Patrol scout doesn't hurt, either.

The Targrath and Omelos get a lot of press, but the Khatrik, Rohric, and Wahant have a special flavour of pain all their own.
