what about railguns? should they be able to damage a spaceship?
Also, why the hell are they so expensive...

Nuclear. :)

If the projectile was massive enough and going fast enough a railgun could.

The problem is that it is unguided and even at the speed of light, would be useless against a maneuvering ship at distance >1/2 light second.

Yes, the price is way out of line for the TL of those things.

Well i suppose that's why they limited the range too short in the rules.
hmmm.... guided railgun rounds...
but seriously, why is a railgun more expensive than a fusion gun...

Considering the energy required to accelerate something to those speeds, it would require MASSIVE capacitors that trickle power over time from the PP.

... true.... but it does just give the weapon a further disadvantage. About the only way I can see it being used is being mounted in pop-up turrets on a Q-ship of some sort...

That's about the only use or, on "star bases" & star ports to protect against boarding ships. However, the "barrel" would be too long to have in turnable turrets of normal size.

I mainly just have bays as turret mounts with large internal machinery. And the rail-gun is mentioned in high guard as being turret mounted. I know it isn't realistic, buts its preferable in... i guess you could call it romanticism, as it harkens back to the days of proper navies with big guns :p

I could definitely see them as BIG turrets on warships. Think 16" guns on an Iowa class BB. That is what Bay weapons are IMTU. I too like like big gun navy flavour.

Oh yes, that's exactly what I mean. big turrets made for fighting big ships. When I draw deck-plans, if I have them turret mounted, then they are normally about 8 to 10 tons. The barbettes are like 6 inch QF's and the turrets are little pom-pom's :D

I must run a high guard game one day... do you think they would let me run a pbp on this site? :D

(Oh, btw. we're going off topic on a solomani thread. do you think it'll get deleted?)

That'd be cool. You should ask.

Oh Nooooooooooo!

Well I think your question was answered to the very best of our abilities in this thread. It then grew into something entirely different. I sincerely hope you are not going to delete this one, as it is a good resource for future members.

And DFW has disputed this due too missiles being too small to have enough Ke to penetrate a hull. Therefore they must either be direct penetrators or use a breaching charge or some similar mechanism.

That still says torpedo. Find me a reference for a missile (and I mean a missile, a 12-to-a-ton missile, not a torpedo)
