Defensive Combat Manoeuvres - Enhance parry

If I understand the way this works, to gain any real advantage from Enhanced parry the defender would need to roll a critical success?

If the attacker does not roll a success there is no damage to be parried and if the attacker does roll a success then the defender must roll a critical success to get a Defensive Combat Manoeuvre.

This also seems to be the case with "Stand Fast" and "Redirect Blow".

What am I missing?

Likewise, Bypass Parry on the attack.

Which is interesting, as by the book both Bypass Parry and Enhance Parry are 'stackable', yet they only really work when they are the single CM gained when rolling a critical against an ordinary success.

Or a high level spirit mage binds multiple spirits to make all his attack unparryable.

Indeed, something out of the ordinary has to happen - spirits, magic items, Heroic Abilities, etc. to get a second Enhance or Bypass.
