And the lunar lander window used by Neil Armstrong during Apollo 11 to find a safer landing spot while running out of fuel.
All because the Primary Guidance, Navigation and Control System was sending the LM to a boulder-strewn area after generating executive overflow errors.

Yeah, spacecraft need windows.

There was too much data for it to handle. But I think we could be straying off topic a bit...

These are good arguments for windows for sure ! At least, in TL 6/7 (?) spacecraft...

I would still used walls with integrated videoscreens getting direct visual feeds. In normal space, they would show what a window in that position would show (except someone overrides it in an emergency). In Jumpspace, they would show nice pictures or Movies. (As I guess looking at J-Space isn't very healthy)

Backsliding a bit to the original thread topic, deck plans have their place if only for occasional reference.

In the Traveller games I have refereed, my players did have a 'basic' deck plan available for whatever ship they crewed or took passage upon, more a how to get around map than much else. Once the party acquired a vessel of their own having more detailed plans was a necessity.

I also use what I refer to as a 'war book' of know vessel designs that players can 'access' by way of their starship's computer database. Mind that information is not always accurate or complete as not all encountered craft are yet cataloged.

Deckplans are like maps - they define the place - so yes usefull even if not directly used.

Of course they defeat this purpose when they don't match the stats or the exterior shape.

IMHO an exterior view is even more compelling - a picture can be worth a thousand words - and may leave the players making guesses about the ship that are usefull in gameplay (and can be answered by deckplans).

Besides the obvious crewing, boarding, and escaping - targeting, sabotaging and crashing can be addressed with deckplans.

As for 'fluffing' books - they likely represent more content not less - the people who do the deck plans are not likely the authors of the other content.

Cheers

Probably not but they do contribute to the total page count, which may have otherwise been filled with something else. (That said I like having the deck plans available).
