Hello,
Last Sunday a new player in my game wanted to make a Troll (Uz) player-character, and I let him do just that. Since the Darktrolls all get Dark Vision and Earth Sense as additional traits, the player wanted to know right away what percentages his character would get in those at the beginning.
I did some awkward page-flipping then and realized that the "Traits" were only fully explained and defined in the RQ Monsters volume. Since "Traits" are technically not "Skills," they do not normally come with a percentage assigned. Both the player and I came to the conclusion that a Trait like Dark Vision simply means the character has an additional or a different way of perception, another sense besides sight, hearing, smell, touch, etc. (which everybody is considered to have). It's more like a question of "you either have this or you don't" instead of "how high is your skill with this?"
But if the player-character really wanted to actively look for something or someone with their Dark Vision or Earthsense, would they get the same percentage as their Basic Skill of "Perception"? Would a Darktroll have a better starting percentage in their Dark Vision than in their other five (six?) senses?
