Cults of Glorantha - First Impressions

Sorry about Peaceful Cut. I think it ended up as being filed under Spirit Magic and will be in the 2nd volume.

So is Spirit Magic seperate from Rune Magic? If so I assume it is the Shamanic Magic mentioned in the core - is this true?

What book is it detailed in - Cults 2 or Magic of Glorantha (I thought the later was God Learner/EWF)?

Yeeees. Kinda.

However, much of what the Animists do uses Rune Magic. Its just that the Animists relate to spirits on a much more friendly basis than the old RQII/3 "stuff it into a Binding and use it to" one was. Animism is one of the major forms of religion in Glorantha (among other places), and they worship the big spirits and are helped by the little ones. That is the key difference in their power.

Cults 2, afaik. Magic is all the other cool stuff, though there's a fair number of EWF and God Learner cults and schools in the Cults books.

In RQ3 games we played with a lot more propriation of spirits by shamanic characters. Sorcerers might simple bend things to their will, but shamans had to work in the spirit realm and didn't want to get a bad rep. in case something took offense.

Actualy I'm pretty excited by the hinst as to how Spirit magic is going to be handled. The RQ3 method of recycling Battle Magic was never entirely satisfactory to me as 'Spirit Magic' realy didn't have anything to do with spirits, except in the most tenuous sense (of being learned from a spirit). A magic system in which the actual magical affects are performed by spirits, as this seems to be, has the potential to be pretty cool.

Kyger Litor will indeed be making an appearance in Cults of Glorantha: Volume II

And your next question for 10 pts is... ...when is CoG2 due out, roughly speaking obviously due to the vagueries of printers, shipping, the apocalypse etc?

It's in edit now, with layout due for completion by the end of October, and with all the bits and bats inbetween it will not hit shelves until the beginning of March.

I wonder why the decision was made to put the Spirit Magic/Animism/Shamanism in the SECOND cults book rather than the first. Now we will have to wait until March for the complete rules for Magic in Glorantha (not to mention it will be spread across FOUR books).

And more importantly, no matter how many books a month you release it just ain't Glorantha until you have at least one Kygor Litor write up!

Stop going on about Kygor Litor, as i understand things he is an UZ diety/spirit and means very little to anyone unless you are playing an UZ or UZ wannabe. The sooner the god learners convert him into their myths the better, get rid, he's useless.

Her. Oh so very, very much a her. Kyger Litor, the Great Mother, is remarkably mamallian...

And she's important because the trolls were the #1 antagonist for RQ players back in the day. Unlike fighting Chaos, you don't come back with strange diseases or extra limbs after fighting trolls.

Or using the Uz as foes/npc's in your campaign. SHE is only the most important troll diety around, being the great mother (and the Uz are matriarchal).

Though really all the broo-ha-ha (what is so funny about broo's anyway?) is that Kygor Litor has been written up somrthing like one hundred and seventeen times in the past - if your going to be gaming in Glorantha you better learn to live her.

The real complaint is that we don't get the rules for Spirit magic until March or so, and that all the magic rules are spread over four books. :(

You mean at most one Kyger Litor write up, Rurik, don't you? The writeup was reprinted four times in the RQ3 product line. Just in case someone had missed the previous ones....

#1 antagonist and #1 ally against Chaos. The Aldryami and Mostali were never ones for cooperating with man, but the UZ are like kin in the fight against Chaos. They are by our sides until the Chaos threat is eliminated and then they eat us. ;)
