Crystaliron rules question

What does advantage does a crystaliron hull have? For example a free trader has:

Armor: crystaliron, armor 2

A far trader just has armor 2.

How does this translate into game mechanics? Thanks.

It's just Armour 2, no other effect.

Crystaliron is just a design material, that influences how much it costs and how much space it takes.

All ships should have the armor material listed. If it doesn't, it is in error. The armor material determines how much volume is required per point of armor as well as the cost and the maximum amount of armor the ship can have.

Hulls have zero volume, so essentially, it doesn't matter.

If you feel this answer is too glib, take it up with the author of High Guard.

If the Far Trader had titanium steel rather than Crystaliron, the armor value would be the same but takes up twice the volume and costs half as much. You also can't carry as large an armor rating. Someone might want to save on the initial cost of a trader while sacrificing cargo space or they are building a TL 9 trader or a TL 7-9 armored non-starship.
