Creature size and reach

Me and my group have been discussing about should the creatures SIZ affect reach. Let's say that a Human of size 8 is using a shortspear and so has a reach of Long, know his opponent is a giant of size 40 who for some reason is wielding a shortsword. As RAW the giant would have to close in to be able to hit the human. Eight being the minimum size for a human is probaly about 140cm tall so his reach at the most with the spear is 150cm while the giant probaly 4m tall armed with his sword has a reach of about 2m of course the giant has to aim his blows downwards which reduces these somewhat but still this defies logic IMHO.

My problem is that I cant seem to figure out any good houserule for this. Few that I have are that after 30 size you can use human 2H-weapons onehanded. Other is that for every 5 SIZ over 15 gives you one step up on reach and every 5 SIZ under 10 reduces it by one. These just don't seem to work especially when we go to the none humanoid creatures. So any help would be much appreciated.

Of course if all else fails we could just wing it when it would seem appropriate.

That might be the best way to approach it, after all there are so many unique circumstances. I think that once you get into giants fighting ducks that you probably have to say natural reach becomes the deciding factor. Same with ducks fighting giant squids and so on.

On the other hand, if you imagine a giant kicking a duck who's wielding a long spear, you can well imagine that the duck would get a chance to stick it with the spear before getting kicked.

As I think about it, when you start getting into great disparities of size it might be that weapon reach starts to become somewhat irrelevant and winging it depending on the situation becomes the best option.

Untested off the cuff sugestion - Rather than using specific sizes use relative size - a difference of around 10-12 Siz allows the larger opponent to increase reach (I'm sort of assuming that for most "normal" humans the size difference will not make a difference - a tall human with a shortsword can't "outreach" a short human with a spear - you might think otherwise)

I think we are just going to go with winging it.

That sounds pretty good actually but in your example sure they would not have the same reach in reality but they would be only one step of reach form each other instead of two.(I am assuming here a very short human and a very tall human)
