Creature of Tir Nan Og update thread

The Greek

Banded Mongoose
Similar to the Balieoisin thread, this one will be for updates to the other Slaine title I am doing some work on - tentatively called 'Creatures of Tir Nan Og'.

CoTNO will be a listing of creatures to use in the Slaine RPG, concentrating on providing stats for animals not in the main rulebook (Slaine or Monsters) and Celtic beasts of legend, as well as updating the creatures missed the first time around (the Bicorne, for example, and the creatures found in the Moon Sow campaign).

At the moment I am looking for possible critters to add to the book, working through a mammoth mythology dictionary (about 1200 pages long, only a quarter of the way through).

I hope to be able to find somewhere in the region of 120 new creatures/animals to add to any Slaine campaign, all of these will be based on either the real world or Celtic myth (Irish, Gaul, Welsh, Scottish, a little British, Manx, Brittany, et al).

So far I have somewhere in the region of 65 possible entries, but I expect a few of those will fall by the wayside as I do more research (for example it may be that the same creature has multiple names, although I have caught most of those, or is too similar to other beasts).

As I research the Celtic world I am finding quite a few little snippets of information, at least one creature will appear in the BoC as a notable NPC, and another looks as though it will provide a plot hook.

Once the initiall research is done I will look at completing a couple of creatures a day in the evenings. This will make a nice break from the BoC and is a target I feel is well within my capabilities.

More later...

Very cool MA, but I wouldn't limit myself to Celtic beasties. Don't forget that Midgard also plays a part in this background and a few Norse critters like the Draugr would be welcome additions. 8)

Well, the Asgard critters might have to wait, it depends on how many Celtic beasties there are out there.

I do hope to do an Asgard book at some point - although that is a few yeaqrs away, at least.

I would really like a book on the Midgarders MA. What I am suggesting is that Midgard, the Lands of the Earth Goddess and the Drune lands are all a part of the Tir Nan Og setting and that you might fill out the pages of your bestiary with Nordic/Germanic critters and still remain faithful to the background. :)
Heck, I would even like to see Tir Nan Og expand into a New world setting. Celts v's Midgarders and Skraelings! Like Pathfinder, only better. 8)

I hope we get the cults book as well. As far as creatures you have access to the Briggs' book and Monaghan's book I hope?

I do have Briggs in front of me...

Today I have done three critters for the letter H - completely arbitrary place to start, but why not?

These include the Heartless and Homuncus from the D20 slaine campaign, and the hobyah.

I will also be adding the henky (intelligent and sociable trolls (but only sociable to other henkies)) and the Hunger Beast (a demon / el-creature that is parasitic), so this will make five 'H' critters, at least.

Tomorrow I will probably finish off these H creatures before moving onwards with the BoC.

Update ends...

Don't forget the mythical Haggis.

There's your next H critter.

 Not really looking for a joke critter...

Working on the A and B entries - so far have completed the Annis, Bicorn, Bogie, Bagwyn, Buggane, Beithir, biasd Bheulach, Baobhan Sith, Boneless, Brollachan and Boobrie.

Plenty of others to get working on - those Celts sure liked their B's!

I think it need comcs relief.

Perhaps some Monty Python inspired humor.

Like the Rabbit --Beware the Rabbit-- and the Beast of Arrrrrggh..

Anyway......

Have a look at my Roots Races post. You may find something interesting there....

It's given me a few ideas.

The Bicorn.

Sounds like a two-horned variant of the Unicorn or a real goat.

or a Seafarer's hat.

Something to do with Algebra.

Are you joking?

As for other joke creatures......

What Ukko was talking about after Slaine's Coranation.

You know that well fed , corpulant beast that fed on hen-pecked husbands and the other that was skin n bones starving because it could only feed on faithful spouces.

There's a panel out of the horned saga with picture a horse like giraffe with stripes or vice verca.

It's probably not a animal as such, but spirit creature or something like that. It was features after Slaine goes into the cauldron to communicate with the Earth godddess.

The caption says 'He is the laughter in the woods'.

I'd say that might be another joke creature.

It's often that you can find pqges of panels taken from the Slaine Horned God Saga in Google images if you google the right word, but this image I can't find.

I motion that you have a section in this book called 'Laughter in the Woods' with all the joke creatures.

The bicorn is a two horned unicorn AND was the hen-pecked hubby eater Ukko described AND is a 'real' creature of Celtic myth. As a 'real' Slaine creature it does what it is supposed to (eat hen pecked husbands) but there is a method to its madness...

I'll leave it at that.

Any other 'jokey' beasts will be done not to be totally ridiculous and will be drawn from Celtic/faerie myth.

Wow, I honestly didn't know the Bicorn and Hen-pecked Husband eater were one and the same.

I guess the other critter very short lived. Possibly exstinct, due to lack of favorite food.

Reading athe latest editon of 'Sliane the King' . I eventualley located the part where Ukko is entertaining the rest of the tribe with his tales of the Bicorn which appaers to be a over weight equine beast ( Horse-like ) with two straight horns growing stright out tf the top of it's head right next to each other. It almost doesn't look right.

The other beast which is said to be related to the Bicorn is called 'Chichevache', Now it could be the the same animal with a different diet. As it's a similer looking four legged hoofed beast with two horns. Although it appaers to be more like a starved cow/bull. Quite ordinary, despite it's name.

Outside of Slaine these creautres have first been featured in Geoffrey Chauncer's Cantebury Tales. A seris of short stories. Thery are well known.

The word 'Chichevanche' is french or latin for 'Thin looking Cow'.

Featured in the 'Clerks Tale'.
