As there is a lot of talk on what the new counters should be like now the minis are extinct, I think its a good idea to get an "official" :? consensus on what the fans want in a new counter set.

I am presenting this poll one point at a time, so we can get a better understanding of what we are talking about I suggest we decide each aspect of the counters before moving on to the next.

So the first decision to make I think is counter shape.
What are you, circle or rectangle?

i voted rectangle / square as i think certain ships on a circle counter would need the counter to be to big or have excess background

I don't have much of a preference and agree that rectangular counters fit the shape of most of the ships better. But I voted circular as they would fit better with the mini bases and theres no reason the counters need to be that different from the mini bases.

I agree, the shape isn't that important (or any other factors) I'd be happy to get anything. But if we have a choice, especially if counters end up becoming very nice as a full blown alternative to minis rather than just a substitute for the odd game you don't have minis for I think it could be useful for mongoose to know what the general consensus is on what we want.

Production costs are clearly an issue at Mongoose Tower right now, so rectangular, to keep the cost down.

If they were high quality thick plastic pieces or high quality cardboard i would have voted round but i've a feeling they will be like the old ones with new piccys on them. As high quality plastic counter pack for all races, all ships and all extras would be a huge cost.

You missed off the most obvious option, square. That way the firing arcs are immediately obviously, even to a half blind baboon.

Between these two, I'm going to go with rectangular counters, simply because it wastes less card, which means you get more on a sheet and less trees get cut down for my hobby.

and we dont desrerve it?

Sure we do but right now with mongoose making staff redundant and canning mini production entirely I rather suspect is not the time to be throwing money around at expensive options when they can produce perfectly useable cheaper counters that, most importantly, people WILL still buy.

Lets be honest as long as theyre official and have nice pictures on them, ALOT of players would pick them up. Especially for ships that now wont be getting minis ever (probably)

There will always be wasted card. Rectangular wastes the least. I voted circular though, because that is how the models are based in ACTA, and keeps the rule mechanics the same.

There are no real mechanics though - existing counters are rectangular and they were accepted before. Most models had rounded bases but people used different base sizes and if someone used a Hex base...well that wasn't disallowed either.

Why go for flat counters? Why not some styrene similar to WizKids Pocket Models (assuming they havent patented any competion out of existense & license & costs allow it)

I dont mean a collectable format, but they could do "packs" for each race, rigged so 1 $10-20 dollar pack gives you a good fleet with all ships available, 2 lets you focus on a ship,3+ lets you get abusive.
Say 4 each of the Skirmishes in the EA EY pack. Good enough for most fleets. But if you want to go Saggi happy you'll have to buy 2 or 3 packs.

mmm, what with all the probs with redundancy and stopping minis, bad produced books, i still think it would be good to get some quality in at least the counters, hell if they were good id even buy them :)
