If we stick with the approach that they ship isn't really there, and is just really small at the centre dot of the counter, I'd go for circles. I mean, why can't you get within 1km in front of or behind the ship in question, but you can get to within 0.5km from the sides?
Oh, and whatever happens, please don't squish the images. The square B5 counter looks terrible >.<

I'd think that a circle would be the best for turning. It really does not matter though, as whatever base geometry Mongoose decides upon can be altered by the player. A circle could be superimposed on a square counter so that the players could decide for themselves I suppose. I cannot think of any ship graphic that would project into the extreme corners of a square anyway, so that would not become an issue for use.

Heck, if the counters were made as proportional rectangular counter proxies of the models, players could even mount their counters on round flying bases just like the current miniatures are. For ease of storage, I could imagine a button magnet glued under each counter, mounted on thick backing material. You can get button magnets with holes in them so that they could be glued to the top of the stems. Then, you would not need a permanent base for any counter model. Granted I'm spinning off topic here just a bit. I guess what I'm saying is that the counter shape might not be all that important. I might like just a rectangular design that incorporated an overhead photo of a studio model in the same scale as the model is.

Players could use them as-is flat on the table or create "bases" made square or circular to spin them on.

In the end, I just want color plan ship photos on PDF or printed. Since the rules state the stem/center dot is where the "action" is, the rest is just garnish. As to rules that currently mention bases, that can be stated from Mongoose as a distance from that center dot (or players can do their own standard bases like I mentioned). I'll stress again, I'm quite fine with just getting color plan shots on PDF or paper. I can cut them out and reinforce/laminate them to my desire. :D

This is the best solution for several reasons. It is quite apparent from the various counters threads that there are several conflicting 'needs' (e.g. round vs rectangle or lines for fire arcs or not) for any counter set. MGP would best serve the gamers by spending time taking good studio photos of studio models and let the gamers make their own. I would like more than the top down photos, I'd like photos from the front, right, left, top, rear and underside. Maybe even some 3/4 views. Heck, they could even publish a book...

...with a PDF version for BuShips of course ;)

I posted another graphic to mull over (or meh over ) over on- http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=33284&start=75&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=

It's a bit of a compromise between the "circle" tribe and the rectangle/square tribe (heh). It uses the idea of full-size ship photos. These might go better visually on a play area for those with models already. Anyway, as Londo would say, "there you are"...

I am somtimes known for crazy ideas (yep), but I thought that if the counters were full-sized and flush on the play surface that clear flying bases (with fire/turn marks on them) could be placed over the center dot for use. Crazy idea? Maybe.

The stem becomes a handle and goes over the "red dot"...
