Conan RQ?

I don't think both system can convert easily. There are in D20 some supernatural powers (feats) that can be obtained at low level and you get an average of 1 feat per level (including class feat).
One could compare feats with legendary abilities but a PC can only have some when he excels at skills.
Moreover in D20, PCs get a lot of hit points as they increase in level while the HP level (with hit location) stays the same in RQ.
Thus it doesn't make sense to have dual stats because in D20, there are often more foes in each battle to make up for the high HP level of the PCs. IN RQ, a PC can't survive a fight against 4-6 opponents (unless they are real crap) and he is a weapon master.

Let me repeat my original question:

What mechanical stuff actually needs converting to play Conan RQ ?

We already know the setting.
Magic we can improvise, since it doesnt work the same in any two Howard stories (other than having a 50% chance of summoning an angry monkey)
Character classes.. no such thing in RQ, so no worries there.
Magic items ? Not really.

Grab a few RQ books, the Lankhmar book (if you want the black sorcery stuff)and you're peachy keen

Well certainly if you want to put it that way, nobody every really needs anything published- we could just make it ourselves. But for those of us with jobs, families, and other hobbies, we would rather buy supplements than write them. So to answer your question, the mechanical stuff that needs converting:

Stats for Conan, other prominent NPCs, and archetypal character types from the stories.
Stats for monsters that appear in the stories.
Stats for spells that appear in the stories (a mist that covers a town and only kills people loyal to Conan? - not in any RQ book I don't think) PS I don't want to improvise.
Stats for Hyborian cults
Backgrounds with a flavor that fits the stories
Legendary Abilities that fit the stories
Etc

I don't see why you can't as long as you don't copy material from source books. But for npc stats I don't see why that wouldn't be allowed

It seems to me that you are only considering the problems of violating the RPG material copyright. The other problem is that you would violate the Intellectual property rights of the owner of the Conan brand.

I have a full time job and a 7 month toddler.. its not like I have more time than anybody else.

However.. Conan never really encounters the same creature in more than one story. So I guess Im just not really finding a use for, say, a Conan Monster book for RQ. Just pick a monster we already have or change it a bit, then use it for the adventure.

First Vincents Version: No doubt EXCELLENT, and I would be willing to PURCHASE a pdf of the work Vincent.

Second: Conan conversion is abolished at this point. It can be done with rules as they are. Just use the world.

Third: When summerizing what needed to be done for a book by book conversion, which is what I had a knack for would take HOURS of work. So, in a sense, it would not be FREE.

This is a mighty project for anyone. What I suggest if you have some conversions done, put it on the Wikki. Why waite around for it, when you can do it yourselves.

Yes, I have things done for it, but the time involved is not much worth a free conversion. Which is why it was abolished.

I agree with Koski. Vincent put a sheer amount of work in his RQ Conan. Even if Mongoose doesn't plan to publish it anymore, I don't think he should let it go for free.

I say put RQ Conan out as a reasonably priced pdf that reflects the author's work. If that sells, maybe mongoose would print it.

Wouldn't that risk action from Conan Properties LLC, owners of the Conan trademark?

That I don't know. The Howard Conan stories are public domain in Australia. Maybe the book can be released in pdf as per the Neverwhere RPG, free but with the option to donate to the website from which it's offered.

The Neverwhere RPG was released that way with the agreement of the licensor (I forget without checking whether this was Neil Gaiman, his publishers, or the producers of the TV version). Mongoose have an agreement with the licensor of Conan, which As I understand it, allows them to produce *A* roleplaying game. Producing another one, whether it is printed or pdf, sold or given away would be a breach of that licence, which could result in Mongoose losing all rights to Conan, which is not likely to help anyone, regardless of their preference for game system.

Howard's original Conan stories are probably now in the public domain - Howard died in 1936. However many other authors have had a hand in Conan, from Lin Carter and L Sprague de Camp, who completed some Howrd fragments, and re-wrote some non-Conan Howard stories to feature our favourite Barbarian, through Marvel Comics and the Arnie films to Robert Jordan, who was writing "Official" Conan novels, and only died a few months ago. One would need to be careful, if relying on the work being in the Public Domain that you did not risk action from (the estates of) these authors. Also while the stories themselves may be out of copyright, I imagine that the name "Conan" has been Trademarked, and would therefore be unavailable without a licence, which brings us back around to the top again.

How about Mongoose releases it as a generic setting, remove all Conan references, and change all names and make a new map and release it. :)
