Conan rpg survival

As much as I love the fluff presented in Mongoose Conan books (I think I have them all bar Tito's now) I too am suffering from d20 burnout and having tried 4e extensively I just didn't click with it, which is a shame cause plenty of people have fun with it. Currently looking into The Riddle of Steel as means of presenting Conan to my players, though now that Chaosiums BRP has been mentioned, I'm intrigued by that idea also.

You might want to give a look at Cthulhu Dark Ages, then. It shows a BRP version adapted for a gritty medieval setting, including nasty Cthulhu-inspired sorcerous grimoires. Would work well for a Conan game straight out of the box (and it is quite cheap, too!)

I 've running Conan campaigns using BRP for years and it always worked perfectly. Two years ao I decided to give D20 a try as there was so much published material that I thought it would be easier.

Bad mistake.

As soon as my current campaign arc is over, I'll revert to BRP, letting the sheer absurdity of D20 rules behind me.

The new Basic Role Playing Book by Chaosium really rocks and contain everything you might need to customize the system to your liking. Best 2008 RPG book for me.

Adapting Cthulhu Dark Ages also seems fun, but a bit harder than straight up BRP due to sanity effects and whatnot. In Cthulhu, at some point you become a raving lunatic, doesn't seem like a Conan-y way to go.

I do agree with that, and I don't use Sanity rules with Conan BRP, although I kept the Terror of the Unknown checks as opposed rolls (Terror vs. POW on the Resistance Table).

You can simply enforce sanity rolls for the most dire situations (e.g. casting spells, or meeting demons etc.)

I've been cautiously considering whether to use BRP to run Conan. My problem with the system, having played a fair amount of Call of Cthulhu, is that the system was, how can I put it, in need of a modern overhaul.

Is the new BRP book a tidied up version of the rules or the same old Call of Cthulhu sytem?

Also, what do people think of the magic systems in the book? How good are any of them at modelling Conanesque magic?

Finally, how complete is the BRP book? Will I be able to use it to convert monsters from Conan D20 to BRP as well as creating characters and appropriate magic?

IMHO BRP is and has been way ahead of the current market systems!
the only reason D20 is or was strong, don't forget past tense" thank WOC?> WAS MARKETING and when have you ever know any thing to be good as its marketing?
its open to use as you want too, with ether tweeking it with MRQ , or down playing it like CoC, the book is big and full of goodies, from two types of magic systems, psionics, mutations and superpowers- and it even comes with stock rules on monsters and animales !
the weakest point is its modern vehicles there weak
but there are some real great player support at Basic central and there is Cthuhlu raising a sci fi version of CoC that allows you to import over the space and combat rules with zero friction or Deceleration:)
I am converting REH Conan over to BRP beacuse I am tried of the meta game system of D20- BRP is clean and modelure.

I like it
been gaming for 27 year<old man voice here from family Guy>
and if Brp would have come out sooner I would not have brought Aces and eights , Traveller or Conan -i would not have need any of them!
I will, wellingly Admit that the Super powers would need tweeking to use as a full custome four color supers game, but if you want to say play Heroes- or Batmans Begins or any Movie super hero game like X-men- its got your back- it can not handle justice league or City of heros it is not Hero system - its cleaner and easier and still old school enought to keep you going - what can i convert now?

I had never heard of BRP, but is sounds incredibly similar to Hârnmaster. 3-18 stat range generated, get some bonuses and penalties from race, calculate Skill Points and set Skill levels on a 00% scale...that about right?

BRP seems to have the same "experience test" system for skills, and in Hârnmaster, weapons and shields are all skills based on broad categories (Blunt, Edged, Puncturing, etc.).

No HP either. Instead, attacker and defender roll opposing rolls and attempt to best their respective skill levels. any roll ending in a "0" or "5" was considered a "CRITIAL", so the higher your skill level, the more chances you gained to get a Critical Success, and the lower your chances of getting a Critical Failure. The results of attack rolls were then compared to a chart that issued damage based on how they matched up. A critically successful attack roll versus a critically failed defense roll could garner a nasty damage result.

Damage was in numbers of D6 rolled, trying to get less than your ENDURANCE. A result like above might say 6E and that meant 6d6 rolled!
