Conan of the Comics

The thread about L. Sprague DeCamp got me thinking about how I first came to know Conan through another non-canonical source, the Marval Comics. Especially Savage Sword of Conan! Not all pastiches are Unforgivable Hidious Crap. There was a lot of exellent artwork and writing in that magazine. John Buschema, Ernie Chan and Roy Thomas gave me many fond memories. In some ways that will always be MY Conan. Later I discovered the original REH stories and came to love them. But the comics led me there. I have a big stack of old SSOC's that I still thomb through occasionally. Does anyone else have a favorate Conan Comic story/ artest? My all time favorate is SSOC#67 "Plunder of Death Island"
"There are days on the Western Ocean..."

I am also a collector of the old B&W SSOC magazines. I have all but five of them. These are what really got me into Conan to start with.

I am curious as to if anyone has heard if Marvel is going to reprint them as "Essential" volumes as they did with Tomb of Dracula, etc. :D

Dark Horse has said it intends to put out Savage Sword of Conan in trade paperbacks, I'd assume some time after it finishes Roy Thomas's run on Conan the Barbarian.

I also was first introduced to Conan throught Marvel's Conan the Barbarian comics. I didn't discover Savage Sword until much later. I reread my entire collection last year and had a blast! You are right, there are a lot of great stories in there. Plus, tons of Conan RPG ideas.

Cool. I wouldn't mind seeing the Marvel color "Conan" comics reprinted as well. There was also a short run of "King Conan" comics that I would like to see.

Dark Horse are already collecting the colour CtB comics in their Chronicles series . Volume 12 taking us up CtB #100 is due July . There are King Conan collections planned too.

My favorites have always been Belit stories for some romantic strange reason. Again, all the SSOC and the original Marvel series have been great gaming material since Mongoose does not seem inclined to put out scenario based material on the Conan line (kiss of death in my opinion as I have stated many times....).

The Thomas/Buscema/Alcala issues of SSoC have always been my favourites
(Black Coloossus, Devil In Iron, Iron Shadows in the Moon and so on...). The Thomas transcription is (as often) quite satisfying, Big John Art is tremendous as always and Alfredo Alcala's inks"à la Gustave Doré" are completely in the mood of the Hyborian age. I've been reading Conan Comics for more than thirty years and i'm still waiting for a better team.
