Mongoose
Anyone else think this is a workable concept? I'm thinking that maybe the Hyborian Age could do with a Pathfinder-compatible makeover - strictly speaking, the nature of Hyboria puts it outside of Paizo's standard compatibility license agreement (as they like to keep things PG-13), but given that Mongoose is a name with a certain amount of weight behind it, to say nothing of Conan, I suspect that the higher-ups might be willing to at least discuss making an exception to the rule.

If that gets off the ground, then perhaps a Kickstarter campaign could be in order. To the best of my knowledge Conan's never had a super-snazzy deluxe full-color hardcover, which seems like a damn shame. A PDF version for the lower pledge levels would be a very good thing to have too, of course. Stretch goals could include the standbys (more pages, more art, maybe a pay bump in there somewhere), and at the higher levels a commitment to continue supporting the line through similar campaigns. After all, if those goals are reached it'd be a fairly safe bet that future products for the line would sell well, and how cool would a full-color, art-heavy, PF-compatible hardback edition of Hyboria's Fiercest be?

Add-ons could likewise include the standards like maps, GM screens, PDF adventure supplements... dice maybe? (I must confess, I'm a bit of a dice junkie myself.)

I'm sure we've all seen just what a well-managed KS campaign with a proven name behind it can accomplish (for those who haven't, see Numenera, Deep Magic and Exalted, to name a few), and I can't help but feel there's a market for this. Agree/disagree? Let's hear it.

Mongoose Publishing Legend rpg campaign setting.

Well they have their own rpg why not introduce a campaign setting?

I know about the d20 version, but it feels wrong to not have their own version of Conan since its clearly nigh on perfect for Mongoose's own Legend system!

Did not Mongoose lost the license to produce Conan ?…. (and I have heard that Robert E. Howard’s estates has some plans…)

I'd have zero interest in any sort of d20 based Conan; however, if a Legend based Conan game were released, as doubtful as the prospects of that might be, I'd buy it in a minute.

What is the current status with the Conan RPG?

There is no current Conan RPG, and if anyone has the license they are keeping it very quiet.

I think CPI/Paradox were hoping that the 2011 movie would have created renewed interest and thus they could ask a higher price for the license. Now I expect they are pinning their hopes on the new Schwarzenegger Conan movie they are working on to do the trick.

So in another year or two?

My first choice would be to push for Conan the multi-system publication that (I believe) Mongoose tried before: D20, Savage Worlds, and Legend. Maybe also link it into one of the OSR systems out there - like Dungeon Crawl Classics or Swords and Wizardry.

My second choice would be Conan: Legend.

My third choice would be Conan D20 - because I'd just convert it all to Legend anyway.

The comedy part of all this is that Robert E Howard's work is all public domain now. It's the Conan pastiche's that are still copywrited.

I had d20 Conan for a few years and did not think that it worked very well. Aside from the fact that the combat was quite tactical (like 3e D&D) and therefore need figures to play it properly, none of the maps in any of the supporting books or scenarios had scales on them.

The whole d20 level thing just didn't seem right with Conan either and a list of spells felt prescriptive. We currently use 'Barbarians of Lemuria' for Conan type games.

The source material was good though.

If a 3e version of Conan came out I would not buy it.

Tough call. We already have 4 incarnation of Conan

- the AD&D Conan/Red sonja modules;
- TSR's Conan RPG;
- the GURS Conan;
- Mongoose's d20 Conan 1st and 2nd edition (and eventually my Fanon Kull suplement).

With that in hand, I'm not sure is a d20 Conan 3rd edition/2nd edition reboot or a whole new Conan RPG using a different system would be worth it.

Just to say that Gamerstable have just released their introductory episode of their new actual play Savage Worlds based game in the world of Conan entitled the Tower of the Ape.

Just figured that might help improve the odds for a Conan game using the Mongoose Publishings own Legend game system?

I'd cautiously say I'd spend money on EITHER a revamped d20 Pathfinderised version, or a Legend version, although I'd prefer the latter.

I say no, simply because I find it hard to find anything to improve on.
It's entirely self contained so there is basically no need to convert it to another system.

Personally I'm not interested in paying another penny for any product which supports the activities of copyright leeches like Paradox, Tolkien Enterprises and their ilk.

The company that owns the right to R.E. Howard Works...are at least the Conan stuff.

Oh darn... is it bad of me to wish they'd relent and let Conan go Legend?

Can't really hope for the Arnie Conan movie to fail for obvious hope it keeps that side of the Conan genre alive and kicking after all... :|

The multi-system idea is the best way to go, if you want to maximise the appeal of the Kickstarter campaign - with myself personally wanting the Legend version of the game.

So Kull is up for grabs eh? :)
