Command Variants- which to choose..

I've played by earth fleet in three engagements now, two actions against Narn (1W 1L) and one action against another EW EA (W).

I don't know if it is because I'm still noobish or not but I have no REAL interest in using command ship variants in my game. At the moment the only real Admiral type ships I can use is the Avenger or Hyperion Command Varient. However I do have several Omegas.

I was wondering if other players used Command varients in Sit-and-Go games or if they reserved the use of one or two in larger games (higher then 5 points raid) or just in campaigns.

ATM I'm in the belief I'll have a single Comman Hyperion and an Avenger in my campaign list representing Fleet Command.

Onto the second part of my post.

Command Hyperion or Avenger. Both cost 1 Raid point. Avenger is a Carrier with Carrier 4, 8 Nova Starfuries Command +1. The Hyperion has 1 flight of Starfuries but Command +2

That said the Hyperion command has less Damage and crew points. The range is similar 10 for the Hyperion and 8 for the Avenger. One is armed with Plasma Cannons F4 A2 P8 S8 while the other has Light Pulse Cannons F/A/P/S 4

Now heres something that gets it. The Forward facing Plasma Cannons on the Avenger as AP. While the F/A/P/S Plasma Cannons have nothing. Is this meant to be a varient or more better working Cannon or are the rules I have not correct?

FINALLY the Hyperion has a Bow Mounted heavy laser 4AD Beam DD. Compared to the Avengers Plasma Cannon.

SO. A weaker Hyperion but +2 Command. To fielding a normal and stronger Hyperion while also fielding an Avenger = more fighters but less of a ship and only command +1.

I've already painted one Hyperion and I have two more and an Avenger on my painting block.
 
Reserve the Command Hyp for larger battles.

Smaller fights (raid level and lower) take the regular hyp first and an avenger if you have room.

To a limited degree it also matters who you are up against. If you already have an iniative (sp? anyone...grr) advantage skip the command ships unless they are part of a buy down.

No the high end ones that some folks have at battle and above can hold there own...but the plus one command over the avenger just doesn't cut it on the hyp.

Well I've got a 5 point Raid list atm. And I'm painting up another 5 points so I'll have 5 points battle. I'll have quite a few ships as well.

The list is (painted and being painted)

2xNova's - = 1pt
3xHyperions = 1.5pt
2xHermes = 1/4 pt
2xOlympus= 1/2 pt
1xSagittarius = 1/4 pt
1xAvenger = 1/2 pt
1xSystem Orestes Monitor = 1 pt
21xFighter Wings

But I was talking in general on lower games 4-5 pts raid and also just on command varients in general.

also its initiative :D
 
i would go for a avenger command personaly, having a combat ship rather than a carrier as command means ure either holding back firepower, or putting your iniciative at risk, with a carrier it should be a bit safer
