Combat Medic

Mongoose
Does anyone know of any military career that includes skills focusing on medics? I was looking around late last night trying to figure out how to make one. I don't have all the supplements to this career type might be already addressed. But it seems the only way to make a combat medic is to go with Scholar (focus on medicine) then switch to Mercenary (Army) or go into the Navy/Marines for combat training. I have a friend who is currently in the U.S. Army Rangers as a combat medic. He entered basic training, got all his combat training just like everyone else, then went into his specialty. He rides helicopters into combat zones, flies out injured troops doing emergency life-saving getting them ready for more specialized surgeons. Just trying to figure out how to do something like this using the Mongoose rules.

Both the scariest combat character and the best medic I have seen were the same character and he was rolled marine - support out of the core rule book.

What % of military people are medics in real life? A 1 in 6 chance of getting medic from the Army or Marine Support skill table is likely a higher %. 2 in 6 chance for Marine advanced EDU table.

If you are trying to get a specific type of character you can use one of the alternate chargen systems from the core rules. With the regular chargen one can fail their qual or have a mishap or the odds might not be with them when trying for a certain skill. Lots of chances to not get a preplanned character with random chargen.

But, even with regular chargen that military man can take medic for both connection skills if things didn't work out the way you planned.

EDIT: what i have found interesting is the lack of any medic skill in the Navy (core rules)
High Guard does have a Support career and medic is one of the specialties.

Mostly I was wondering if there was a specialty... at work so I don't have the ability to look at books, but in "Merchant Prince" for every career, there are 3 separate specialties you can select. I was just wondering if there was a specialty focusing on medic etc... under one of the combat oriented careers.
Just trying to figure out how to imitate s real life combat medic. Not sure how the British Army is organized, but I know a little about the U.S. One of my players simply asked... "Can I be a combat medic like Aaron." the friend of mine who is an Army Ranger Medic.

As I said, Navy High Guard has Navy Support career Specialist: Medical. This makes sense because there is no medic skill in the core book.

No medical specialty in Mercenary. But this is covered in the core book.

It's not like the medical specialties have 3+ medic options in the tables. I believe at best it's 2. So I'd say if you are sticking to random chargen the support specialty is not that far off from the medic specialty careers. Especially if you go marine and have a good EDU - which a doc should have.

Again, one bad roll and your out so if you are really trying to get a specific type of character I still think you should use a different optional chargen. It would "imitate a real life combat medic" better.

Just for comparison, there are lots of military careers that don't have specialties. Comm, Driver Track [tank], Advocate [JAG], Flyer(Rotor), Remote Operations [drone operator], Explosives, Heavy Weapon(Field Artillery), and so on.

The answer is yes you can.

Under the Army career Support specialty is what you would be looking for in the core rulebook. If the player wanted to be a combat medic I would let him pick one level in the medic skill from that table. As far as the U.S. Army is concerned Combat Medic is a support specialty.

1st term Army Combat Medic (Support) using the core rule book.
Basic Training skills from the Service skills table
Drive, wheeled or tracked - 0
Athletics endurance -0
Gun Combat, Slug Rifles -0
Recon - 0
Melee, unarmed or small blades -0
Heavy Weapons, Launchers - 0

First term skill
Specialist: Support
Medic - 1

There you go a 1 term combat medic ala U.S. Army. Note: It doesn't matter if he's in a ranger unit or not. He doesn't get commando like skills. Combat medics don't typically go to ranger school.

And he also gets Gun Combat at 1 for being a Rank 0 guy.

I'm not sure how helpful this is in this incarnation, but I used to try to get Medical-3, which magically transforms you into an MD and gets you commissioned when applying to a Merc outfit.

Theoretically, the military chain of command should do the same while you're in service.

I suppose you could say combat medics are somewhat obsolete in the far future. The reliability of transport and advanced medical equipment that can be built into uniforms could reduce the need for such specialists. I read that during the various bush wars the South African military had a surgeon assigned to each platoon. I don't know if this is true or not but I've applied to the sci-fi games I've run ever since.
Also medic pretty much covers everything from wound treatment to diagnosing diseases. So just having it would make a character the designated medic.
This post is a little muddled so if I haven't made myself clear feel free to ask for clarification.

Ah yes forgot to check the rank table.

And yes the Medic-1 skill I would house rule as selectable if the player really wanted to be a combat medic.

Glad we could help you Jak!
