I liked the concept of 50/500 for initial colony size. 500 is the safer number for a colony to avoid inbreeding and genetic problems. This also tells us the absolute minimum when designing colony ships.
Bty the way, having nothing better to do I calculated a million tonne space vessel using a sphere for easy imagery. It would have a diameter of almost 295 meters. Most aircraft carriers have a length of 332 meters. I actually assume a colony ship would use dispersed to save money and time. Tomorrow's projet is building a colony ship starting at 1 Mt and see what it holds then work my way down.
