Yep. not too long ago in a Gear Kreig game I played in the GM used a WW2 type Submarine. My knowledge of the sub and its systems and the likely location of those systems helped me turn what would have been an extremely dangerous mission into a substantially less deadly mission. It was still risky, but nto nearly as risky as the GM had originally hoped.
So if the system had given him a better understanding of submarine design I would not have been able to effect the scenario the way I did, because he would have been able to see it coming.
Take the IT example above, when I run Matrix stuff in my Shadowrun games, I talk to my IT players about various scenarios. Which has enabled me to still catch them off guard and provide the degree of challenge I was looking for.
So a good "build system" helps those of us ignorant about such things to hopefully provide the degree of challenge we are hoping for without having to risk asking inquiring questions which may end up giving them insights into the scenario we run, and lessoning the desired challenge of the experience.
OF course Google and other search engines have been a god send on a lot of subjects over the last 10 years or so.
