CHinese Army compendium comments

Mongoose
Just read this book, excellent stuff, the equipment are quite accurate.

A few corrections on my part:

1. Page 25. The Chinese KMT NRA 200th XX was not destroyed in Dec. 1939 but was mauled in Jan. 1940 in the battle of Kunlun Pass losing 2/3 of its force and most of its vehicles.

It was refitted. In June 1942, it was again mauled in Burma and had to be refitted again.

From Aug. 1944 to the end of the war in mid 1945. The 200th XX participated in successful offensives vs. the Japanese in Southern China.

The 200th XX was finally destroyed in Jan. 1949 during the Huai Hai campaign.

2. Page 72. The Chinese Red army guerilla armory list.

OK, from my research, the CCP practically used the same small arms as the KMT NRA along with large numbers of captured Japanese weapons. This was so because the CCP guerillas relied mostly on captured weapons to supply its troops. From 1937-1945, the CCP fought both the KMT NRA and the Japanese. The CCP fought the KMT NRA(and its warlord allies) from 1927-1936. Then there was the second united front which the CCP suspended fighting with the KMT NRA and united to fight the Japanese invaders. The Second United front lasted from 1937-1941, in early 1941, the KMT NRA and CCP fought major battles in Anhui province. This ended the Second united front and from 1941-1945, the KMT NRA and CCP fought each other as much(or even more) than they fought the Japanese.

Also the USSR sent very limited support to the CCP in the way of small arms and training troops but most of the weapons used by the CCP from 1937-1945 were of captured weapons from the KMT NRA and the Japanese.

So if you were to have an armory list for the CCP it would be:

Mauser pistol
Hanyang 88
Arisaka Type 38 & 99
Czech Zb26 LMG
Japanese Type 11 & 96 LMG
Maxim HMG
Japanese Type 92 HMG
anti tank explosives
heavy anti tank explosives
81mm mortar
Japanese Type 89 Knee mortar

OK also, the CCP guerillas did not have trucks in 1937-1945, they were a guerilla force and functioned as such, they carried their supplies using human labor or pack animals. They used captured Japanese and NRA tanks, vehicles during the 1945-1949 civil war.

3. An addendum to page 73. Chinese armies of all stripes and affiliations(including the KMT NRA and especially the CCP) relied and used captured enemy equipment. This was due to the poor foreign supply routes to China which were mostly closed in 1937-1945. Also the KMT NRA did rely on captured enemy equipment as the CCP since the KMT NRA had some factories and workshops located in western China which produced small arms and some artillery pieces(these were relocated from Eastern China in 1937-1938).

Great stuff!!!!!

Will there be a Japanese army compendium in the future?

Not so soon.
Japanese forces are well covered in the Pacific War book.
(I even sneaked Japanese paratroopers in...)

However - the Gear Krieg book will feature very solid rules to play WaW with infantry stands (as in Flames of War), so I may bring out army books with the converted 15mm (or 6mm) unit stats. And that will of course feature Japanese too.
We'll see...
