Cheap, stackable storage system for Starfleet ships

My ships were taking a beating being transported loose in boxes and I am too cheap to buy one of the foam case systems so I came up with this system to tranport my minis to my LGS.

It consists of standard size tomato boxes (generally they are all around 24"x15" in size), a sheet of 2'x2' 1/4" plywood and a some #6 1/4" screws. I got the boxes free at my local warehouse supermarket, the wood was $4 a sheet and 3 packets of screws per box was another $3, for a total of about $7 per box. If you wanted to cut down a larger sheet of plywood you could save a little more.

For the retaining strips I cut up an old board game box into 2" strips with a 1x1" deep V-notch cut every 2.5". These were screwed down with a 1" spacing between each row.

The system works better than I had hoped and is super secure, just be sure to push the stands into the slot by the base of the peg (they are pretty tight the first time) as you will overtorque the base by pushing on the ship to slide it in. It also helps to put a bend in the cardboard lip at the edge of each V-slot opening to aid base entry.

The boxes come with tabs for stacking as well so my 3 fleets (and counting) travel well all stacked.
