I am hoping within the next two weeks to do a play test game, but I am having a problem with character creation. Can anyone give me an example?

Check down the screne a bit under the main Traveller Forum heading. There are 3 or 4 different sections with titles like V2 Character Samples, etc. See if what you need is there.

The assigning of skills and when someone makes an advancement roll.
Advancement rolls are made each term, assuming the survival roll is successful, and occur after rolling for events.
I'm not sure what you mean about assigning skills.
There's a character generation checklist on pages 2 and 3 of the character creation section. Is this not helpful? There's also a pretty detailed example at the end of the chapter, pages 39-41.
Here is another walkthrough of character generation, but this is from V1 of the playtest rules, so a few things have changed.
Note, the link posted above for T5 is a different game and not really relevant to generating a character in Mongoose Traveller.
