In case any of you still don't have the book yet, here's how it breaks down: Barbarians and Soldiers are the top tier of combat ability. Nomads and Borderers are the second tier (and still really tough). Pirates are sort of in the second tier as well; they lack hit points and base attack bonus/attacks per round, but they have better defense than Borderers/Nomads AND they get both sneak attack and the mobility abilities, and a sneak attacking character with Greater Mobility is no joke.
Thieves and Nobles are third tier, except when sneak attack comes into play, in which case Thieves seriously dish it out. Scholars are definately the bottom.
