Chagas and Kushites

OK this is what happens when you get older, you absolutely forget everything.

As part of my research for a Kushite campaign, I want to read the story where Conan is in The Chagan capitol of Kush, El Shebbah, Now the main problem is I can't remember the story or which book it is in (of the ACE fantasy paperbacks).

Vincent D. to the rescue please!!!

A little background; I think the black kingdoms are a great place to adventure, with the speudo-stygian Chagas, the semi-civilized Kushites, barbaric Darfuri, more lost cities of green stone that you can shake a stick at and some bad ass monsters, jungles, gold, slaves, other foreign adventurers, wyverns, dragons, lotus bushes and lost races. I am basically starting out with a shipwreck premise on the coast of Kush north of the Zarkheba.

I think I will force my players to accept a party of pre-generated characters (7th to 9th level) of a Nemedian Scholar (emphasis on Hypnotism, Divination, and Prestidigitation), Argossean Pirate (1st mate of the wrecked-beyond repair vessel washed ashore), Nemedian Soldier/ Thief (Scholar's brother and muscle), and a Kushite Barbarian (an escaped slave from the coastal tribe, where the hyborians washed ashore upon). To make things fun only the Scholar and ex-slave can speak Stygian as a common language(although the other characters have a free language slot to learn if they stick around for 3 months).

Great thing about shipwrecks is that the characters are basically naked. I'm giving the PCs the ability to connect because the escaped slave (whose former owners are about 4 hours away & on his trail) finds the washed up PCs on the beach, wakes them up, moves them off the beach and indentures his aid for getting them to El Shabbah for their help against recapture.

Basically the only weapons the Hyborians have are two daggers and one cutlass, all other weapons will have to be fashioned from nature or stolen or discovered elsewhere.

THe goal for our party is to reach civilization, El Shebbah, which is many moons distant, and through hostile jungle and savana one must trek.

THe foes will primarily be men, although wildlife, if startled. may soon be an adversary, I think a mid Grade Kushite Witchfinder will be a great nemesis, but I'm still thinking about how to involve my players, since they will be primarily trying to avoid contact with the locals until they get to the Friendly Kushite's tribal homelands.

Of course ancient ruins with some nasties or lost race are alsways pretty cool.

"Vale of Lost Women"
"The Castle of Terror"
"A Snout in the Dark"
Are the ones leading up to and including Conan's arrival in Meroe, the capital of Kush. Those are the ones I know about.

I agree that it probably would be a most interesting campaign. I think a published adventure set is out called "Tales of the Black Kingdoms". Also you might want to check out Nyambe, a D20 set for African style adventures, which is pretty cool.

I just have to say that i love your campain idea. The black kingdoms are really good for staging this kind of adventures. Good luck on playing it.

I also have to mention that i to have used shipwrecks as story hooks from time to time and they are savagely effective.Especially when your players arn't expecting them.

The story you are looking for is "A Snout in the Dark" which can be found in the Ace/Lancer Conan of Cimmeria. It is an L. Sprague de Camp completion of an abandoned REH story.

The unedited version of the story is available in Del Rey's The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian and Gollancz's The Conan Chronicles Vol. 1: The People of the Black Circle and The Complete Chronicles of Conan.

L. Sprague de Camp changed some of the names in the story, so you might notice some discrepencies with the RPG because the RPG retains Howard's original names.

Thanks Vincent, while you're around....
What's up with Chagas getting a bonus sorcery feat at starting, when they don't have sorceror as a preferred class, was that supposed to be the way it was, since Chagas are of Stygian heritage and Stygians have sorceror as their preferred class? Whoops, I meant to say Scholar/ scholarly in place of the 'sorceror-ly' words used above.

Conversely would it not make sense if the Chagans have a bonus scholar feat, then the stygians would as well?

Just thinking outloud, in any case have a great Memorial Day Weekend and remember that Freedom is not Free.

Coming in a little late here, but I just wanted to point out that many of the Solomon Kane stories are great inspiration for adventures set in the Black Kingdoms.

Well, my immediate answer would be that not every bonus feat has to play into favoured classes, although your other point stands.

However, all of the sorcery feats listed have, as a requirement, a base magic attack of at least +1... which you can't get until you're a 2nd-level Scholar. :?

In 2nd edition, the Chaga's bonus feat list is changing to Deceitful, EWP: Stygian Bow, Negotiator, or Track. I think this covers their predilictions for hunting and treachery quite nicely.
