Centauri vs Minbari Planetfall

Da Boss

Mongoose
As part of our campaign we recently played a Planet Fall Mission

My fleet - 2 Liati (1 with +2 AD Ion cannons) and Dargan (1 Squadron), 1 Balvarin, 2 Demos (squadron), 2 Corvan (squadron), 2 Kutai, 1 Amar

Simons fleet - 2 Tinaishi (squadron), 1 Morshin (+1 Spd), 1 Leshath and Ashinat (squadron), 2 Torotha (squadron), 1 Tigara

The field of battle was laid out with a pair of asteroid fields flanking the planet and one asteroid field in each deployment zone.

Simon lost set up and deployed his entire fleet in and around his beloved asteroid field. I spread my fleet out and moved towards the planet screened by the asteroids and launching my fighters. The first couple of turns were cagey with no firing apart from a pot shot at a Rutarian from a Tiniashi (which killed it)

Turn 3 fireworks started - my Demos closed in on his Tig and Torothas who had advanced up toward the planet on CBD. The lead Demos weathered the fire (I had lost initiative and would do so for the next 5 or so turns) of the Tig and the two Demos unleashed a full barrage of all weapons at the Tiagra and 1 Torotha - both Centauri ships having seen both Minbari vessels!!

I had hoped that this would spell the end of at least the Torotha. - but a unfeasible amount of CBD saves coupled with rather pathetic ammo meant that both ships suffered only minor damage - although the Tigara took a bridge hit - which would doom it later. The return fire hammered one Demos leaving it near crippled.

Turn 4 saw the Minbari enter their homeland of the asteroid field near the planet (the Squadrons making sure they had CQ5 to safely navigate the rocks)- the Ashinta intensifying defensive fire so that his Nials could jump my fighters and still AAF them (annoying rule). The Liatis and Dargan cruised past the Asteroids and set up what should be a kill zone around them. The Tinashi squadron vaporised the Balvarin with laughable ease. The Dargan took heavy damage and lost its starboard weapons meaning no return fire on the Tinashis. My big squadron opened up hoping to event the odds and achieved pretty much nothing between stealth, CBD, interceptors etc. Even the Morshin shrugged off the attack with little effect!

Turns 5-6 saw my fleet begin to erode whilst the "fragile" Minbari just soaked the hits, something I am not used to in Centauri / Minbari match ups. Those ships that I saw, I damaged but never particularly effectively - with the sole exception of sending one Tinashi adrift! Turn 6 was looking dire when a Tinashi saw my CQ6 Corvan and it went from undamaged to 2 damage and 2 crew………

Turn 7 saw me bemoaning at length the invincibility of Simons ships before I finally got a turns good firing in - Killing the Morhsin, 1 Torotha and sending the adrift Tiniashi and the Tigara to the brink of death. With 2 undamaged Liati, 1 Dargan limping away and a Corvan and Kutai left I thought I could salvage it and indeed I finished the two dying Minbari ships bringing the scores near level.

But the dice turned again, I just could not see the remaining ships and in one horrible turn I failed to fire and Simon killed the Dargan, sent 1 Liati adrift whilst giving the other power fluctuations. The last couple of turns saw the adrift Liati wander in front of the remaining Tinashi (never a good idea) and although it survived it - the last Torotha CAFed it into oblivion.

End of game saw me with one surviving Liati (which gained +2AF) and Simon with a Tinashi, Leshath, Toratha, and Ashinta plus 1 troop on the planet - a most convincing win. However his fleet was sorely mauled (and the +1 spd to the Tinaishi was not really all he had hoped for)

Thanks for the battle report! Sad to see fortune so against our beloved Republic!

How did you generate a Planet Fall mission in the campaign? Do you have your own Scenario generation tables that include it? The reason I ask is that we just re-did our own scenario generator in order to encourage more location-specific missions.

Also...a shame the Lesath survived. I hate those little ships.

Greg generated a tree campaign route for this campaign - there are 6 players - 3 for Chaos, 3 for Order. Scenarios start at skrimish and increase as the campaign continues, their exact nature depends on the results of the battle in the tree structure. I think its better as it has a sense of a build to a epic showdown and no silly little missions wining locations.

Chaos - Shadows, Drakh, Centauri
Order, Minbari, Gaim and League.

just had two brutal planetfall games - one is described above, the other saw the League and drakh virtually annhiliate each other - Gaim vs Shadows to come.
