Campaign play and refitting

I noticed there is no refit available for ASDIC/Sonar in the campaign rules.

How about a refit rule that enables the ship to gain the sub hunter special trait.

Yes or no on the idea?

then it can be limited to the class of ships that actually were fitted to it, and use historical time line so it can only be introduced in the year of the war it was made readily available.

In the absence of that data (which I guess would be the case for most players) it should be restricted to destroyers only.

That works for me, and sub players need not worry too much - they still have a 5 in 6 chance of avoiding detection.

The problem is it reveals them all in said area, not just one

And the problem with that is what, exactly? :)

Anything that encourages players to concentrate on the above water aspects whilst leaving the fishheads at home is a "Good Thing" in my book :D

I think ships that historically had sonar should be able to have it in the game - it relfects the advancements in the war.

Sub had it good until the advancements in technology.

All you have to do is spread your subs out further so that only one or two have a chance of being spotted at any one time.

Sonar is one of those areas that is pretty poorly represented in most naval rules. Its generally seen as a device purely for detecting submarines but thats not the case; in many action reports from WW2, especially those fought at night or in reduced visibility the initial contact with, or at least alerting to the presence of, an enemy surface force was achieved by sonar.

Most DDs and many smaler ships had sonar (so did some cruisers and the odd aircraft carrier); the trait I believe represents those vessels with advanced sets.
