Calling all Swindonians

I thought about coming to the 07 open day, but since it´s a little far from where I live, I wanted to stay over the weekend - so, I thought maybe one of you could give me some tips about where to stay, what to do there (apart from playing ACTA of course), and how to get to Swindon in the first place.

Any advice/help would be appreciated! :)

If you intend to fly, Swindow is just down the M4 motorway from either Heathrow or Bristol, about an hour either way.

If you are looking for things to do in Swindow (other than ACTA):
there's the steam museum http://www.steam-museum.org.uk/

or Avebury stone circle (if you are willing to travel a few miles) http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-findaplace/w-avebury/
 
travel inns or travel lodges are probably going to be the best for a cheap pplace to stay, and they are normally quite good. its that or you try to find a B&B, they are normally a bit more but you get breakfast and they will be in swindon rather than the outskirts. if you stay in a travel lodge near a motorway it may cost quite a bit to get to swindon!
 
Thanks all, you´ve been very helpful so far.

I´ve looked on the web and found some B&B places pretty close to where the open day is being held, so that shouldn´t be too much of a problem.

BTW, while looking, I´ve found a description of Swindon as "the town of surprises" (or something like that) - it may be just me, but somehow that sounds scary... :roll:
 
these are the main tourist areas for swindon:

The Brunel Centre and the Parade are shopping areas in the town centre.
Retail parks include Greenbridge, West Swindon Shopping Centre, Stratton and the Orbital Shopping Park.
The Steam Railway Museum shows Swindon's part in the history of the Great Western Railway.
McArthur Glen Designer Outlet is an indoor shopping mall for reduced price designer goods, using the buildings of the disused railway engine works. The Outlet is adjacent to the Steam Museum.
The Link Centre and the Oasis are leisure centres.
Broome Manor Golf Complex is a golf course set against the backdrop of the Marlborough Downs.
Public parks include Lydiard Country Park, Stanton Park, Barbury Castle, Queens Park and Coate Water.
Shaw Community Forest is being developed on the site of a former landfill site in West Swindon.
The National Monuments Record Centre is in Swindon, the home of English Heritage.
The Wyvern theatre, managed by Hetherington Seeling Theatres Ltd. on behalf of the council. Closed for remedial work in September 2006 due to the discovery of asbestos in the building; scheduled to re-open in Summer 2007.

Just a small, innucent question: Is there a station in Swindon?

Not to high jack the thread, and I know it is the off season, but how is Swindon Town doing? Last I heard they were third in the table. If they still are, does that merit promotion?

You mean a train station?

Yes, on Station Road, a little to the South and West of Mongoose, North of the Open Day venue.

About a mile (1.5km) away - easily walkable.
 
Nearer the time, when more poeople know I'm sure we can arrange taxi share/walking buses from the train station to the Open Day for those arriving by train in the morning.

I've done a walking bus before, I'll do it again :lol:

if you are flying which airport are you flying to? either way you'll need to get yourself to paddington station by using the underground. Heathrow definitly has a train station, i think the other main ones do too. if you find a flight your pretty much sorted as the trains aren't too much of a problem
 
Depending on where you're flying from on the continent, you could fly to Bristol, get the airport bus to Temple Meads railway station in Bristol and then get the train from there to Swindon.

Not sure about flying, though that would seem to be the fastest way. I wonder which airports, if any Ryanair hits. And how I would get from there to Swindon.
