Building structures on Mars

If we ever get there in any meaningful way creating buildings from native material cheaply will be important. Here is one possible way. Espacially by using basalt rebar material: http://www.forcedgreen.com/2010/05/green-dome-sweet-home/

not so sure that door is air tight ;)

Of course not. But, I think that this general type of construction and material would be doable as once you have tools in place to manipulate the native materials you can build. The type of building created lends itself for being made airtight and uses the minimum materials for a given amount of space.

True.

Tho it may be easier to make modular pieces then assemble Bucky Domes from them rather than one single structure tho with a structure made of pieces sealing them is an issue.

How would you seal the single piece structure pictured? Simply use thick enough material or would there be a liner? A plastic of some kind stored in aerosol form that could be sprayed on?

Spay on shotcrete is usually a faster construction method than making and assembling geo dome panels. And much stronger.

Trying to keep to natively available and easily processed materials... I'd say some type of sprayed silica glass material as a thin layer within the several inches thick shotcrete & basalt rebar dome. That should do it nicely.

p.s. hiro. One of the most luxurious Dome homes is down the road from you at Cherry Creek.

I'm positive this has been covered before on here - there was a company producing inflatable structures that you then sprayed with concrete, then deflated. Almost instant concrete structures for field hospitals, etc. or for living on Mars.

After x number of years I'm sure that brilliant people will come up with similar ideas and post them.
