Building a Z'takk

Greg Smith

Mongoose
I have had the misfortune to come up against the Vree monster that is the Z'takk in a couple of tournamants. So having just bought a Vree fleet second hand, I thought I'd have a go at building/converting one.

Step 1: take two spare Xill battle saucers, some extra guns and the top piece from a Xeel, and some brass rod. (The Vree fleet I bought had the Xorrs constructed without bottom guns, some of which were used on the Xeels to make them more sexy).

I must stress it essential to make sure the tops and bottoms of the Xills fit before assembly. They require a heck of a lot of filing to get the two halves to meet.

Step 2: Pin the tops of the battle saucers together to make the centre section of the new ship. I decided that I would use the bottom of the Xill as my top, because there is a nice flat piece in the middle for my C&C. Also it would make it look different to the other Xills in my fleet.

Step 3: Drill holes for aeriels in the centre and guns on the rim. I didn't have any concrete plan for this. Just decided on the fly what would fit. My dremel made this a pretty quick and painless process.

Step 4: Glue it all together.

Step 6: paint it.

Nice work Greg and certainly looks the part. Arguably more logical and a better fit in detailed style than the "real" one.

Interesting project. It looks good so far; I look forward to seeing another picture after step 6 is completed. :)

One minor correction, though - the Xorr is the one with the guns, the Xill is what you used for your Z'Takk's hull. ;)

Have there been different versions of the Xill? I bought some Xorrs and Xills second hand myself some time ago, and thought they were effectively new. None of the ships were painted and the Xorrs definitely weren't assembled. But the Xills weren't in two halves; either they had already been assembled or they were originally supplied as one-piece ships.

Have bought 3 Mongoose Vree Box sets over the years, 2 at the beginning of CTA, 1 near the end, (the last one came with 7 Xills  if I remember right), all of the Xills were 2 part.

Maybe AOG cast theirs in 1 piece. (Guessing that from what you said you got them long before Iron Wind were involved) As a 1 piece, would effectively "waste" a lot of metal, so makes more sense AdrianH that yours were assembled, still stranger things have happened.

Does your gaming table creak and lean to one side when you deploy them.

I could field them on my gaming table, it was iron re-inforcements to help hold the weight of the Drakh mo-ship

Commendable enterprise indeed sir, of course, no match for balancing the weight of the two Adira's I have in reserve. (well couldn't resist buying a 2nd during the great Mongoose sale  )

(Having said that, can't throw too many stones either given that a certain supercarrier, (sometimes also called a dreadnought) that I designed & cast outweighs all of these put together).

but it also looks way cooler, and it might even be that it has a place in a future space combat game, perhaps some kind of supership, a Titan if you will.. .. .. .. ..

Damn Vree with all their X's and Z's got me all confused.
You're not the only one who gets them confused, but now you're a Vree admiral you need to get them right when declaring what you're fielding in a game. ;) On the other hand, if your opponent can't tell the difference between a Xorr and a Xill, that's his problem. He'll soon learn.

I've only seen the version with two halves.
It also explains something which puzzled me when I first got them, which is the gaps between the projections round the rim. If the Xill was moulded as two halves then that would have been easy, but since I thought the ship was one piece, that level of detail seemed pretty amazing.

Excellent idea AdrianH, I can use this.

Did you know that many of my scratchbuilds have amazing levels of detail, ...................no they are not gaps..............definitely not gaps.... might be mistaken for gaps............. but they are in fact planned in detail and very difficult to achieve, may I add.................Ahem.,

And think of the Milliput I can save.

hmmm ...........Could make a second design and have some kind of "Clash of The Titans" ......................an epic end battle........... somewhere................. perhaps.

And as for future space combat games - stopped using the dreaded N### term some time ago She is most certainly a "Deep Black, RFed Titan" ship to me. Course I might lend her to the N@@@ fleet at some point, with your IP pemission of course.
