Clearly, no point in asking the public sector. So, they'll just have to ask private enterprise for funding.

Sixty million bucks. Doesn't sound like much, when you consider how many billions they spend on defense ...

Doesn't matter, anyway. It gets shelved today for lack of funding, some time down the line someone will come up with the grand idea of resurrecting the blueprints and making it work. Give it time. Sooner or later, if humans want to make something happen, they will make it happen with or without government help.

Of course that private funding could come from entrepreneurs from any nation ...
 
It's only one of the projects. There are many more military laser and railgun projects. These didn't even have a date for useable products being produced.
 
Well, I think we have already developed enough very efficient methods
to kill people, I see no urgent need to spend lots of money for the deve-
lopment of additional methods.

Yep. The AF has a really good one that is far along vis-a-vis lasers.
 
Politics and budgets often interrupt long term military research projects - but the ideas rarely die if they have any merit and the military finds ways to get them implemented...
