The Pentagon has plans to deploy its first ever ship-mounted laser next year, a disruptive, cutting-edge weapon capable of obliterating small boats and unmanned aerial vehicles with a blast of infrared energy.
more of a long awaited thing as we've known its possible for ages, especially since we have had technology to make small powerful lasers for a long time, used in mining, some industries and for medical usage.
A Pentagon spokesperson went on to say that what they actually wanted was "sharks with frickin' laser beams", but this has been cost prohibitive. So long as there is good weather and the target is slow & moves in straight lines these lasers should be almost as effective as other weapons systems that were in service forty years ago. The spokesperson went on to say "If the Navy is attacked by terrorists throwing stones from hot air balloons or rowboats they'll be utterly obliterated; so long as the weather is good."
