Breaking Squadron...

Ok, I just want to clarify something. In the main book, on page 25 in the Squadron section, it states that any ship can break squadron simply by declaring so during the movement phase. It doesn't say whether you must activate the ship/squadron so do so though. Does this mean that if I have a squadron I can choose to break one ship off and then be able to activate it separately from the rest of the squadron? If so this could be real useful to my boresighted fleets for when I need that extra sink in a pinch.

Sweet. That'll be a major help with my EA. I like running squadrons to maximize firepower, but sometimes, especially midway to late in the game, these squadrons start to get in my way. Being able to instantly break squadron would help a lot in these situations.

Yeah, early on in our group I pushed folks to start using squadrons early on in a battle to get the big hit off and drop out as you found the need to maneuver. Greatly helped a number of races that were suffering against the forward arc beam squadrons of doom as they could start to answer AD for AD more easily but still get bore sights later in the turn (or in the Vree's case, hide more easily).

Don;t think of it as having to break squadrons, think of it as having individual ships break off from a squadron, the rest of the squadron can remain intact (subject to any minimum ship number constraint that I can't recall right now, if any)

Minimum is 2, for most races max is still 4. I love squadrons. There is little that can stand up to 4 WS at once.

Here is a question of language for the rules:

When you are setting up at the beginning of a game, do you place a squadron all at once or do you place individual ships and then nominate them once set up is complete?

I can't find a clear definition of procedure here.

does it matter? I was under the impression that one side set up their whole force then the other side, so not sure why the distinction.

Because if you set up first and then see what you are playing you would then have the option to squadron together if you felt it gave you a tactical advantage.

Is it splitting hairs? Yes, but it is just something I was curious about.

"If you use squadrons, you must organise any ships into them before a scenario begins." Sounds like it needs to be done before they are put down.

AH, I didn't understand the question... yes, I would say before ANYONE puts anything down, as set-up is part of the scenario. Our group is fairly lax about that it, but in any competitive environment we did it as part of revealing what you took prior to set up.

Harry -
You're quaoting the text that is not specific. I asked the question because the scenario doesn't begin at set up for most games, it begins after.

We normally declare squadrons when setting up. So when I set up my ships, I'll say "there 4 are in a squadron". Yes it does give my opponent the chance to decide on his squadrons after I declare mine... but we're pretty lax about it too, any squadrons can be declared or undeclared before the 1st turn initiative is rolled. I don't see it having any noticeable effect whatsoever.
