If you want a great campaign to run get the Ragged Eade with the Cold Equation as the prelude mini-adventure leading into the Ragged Edge. You can run the Ragged Edge without the Cold Equation if you have to pick one based on how much money is at hand....the difference between the 2 is that the Ragged Edge will give you months of game material (took my group 6 months) while the Cold Equation will be done in 2-3 sessions.
As far as source material, its pretty much all good, it really depends on what direction you are going in...The Guide to the Galaxy is a good place to start and can easily be used for both 1st and 2nd edition. My favorite source book/box is the Guide to the Station, but that will cost more than 40. Also the Techno-Mage book will provide the spells, skills, and feats as well as background to go along with the 2nd edition material released in the last 2 issues of the downloadable S&P. Obviously if you are running a campaign on Mars Free Mars would be the way to go.
